European Beakdown Cover

Featured Replies

Got a variety of quotes for a two week trip from £39 from Green flag (Axa Insurance), thru £49 from Churchill to £59 from the AA (Up £10 from last year and I'm a member) for what appears to be the same cover.

AA's premium variation on Euro breakdown, which includes £500 contribution to parts cost is £89 to me.

Am I alone in thinking this is extortionate ?

My main insurance is with Axa (Swiftcover) so I'm inclined to go with Greenflag

Car is 2003 fabia saloon with 44K on clock - cam belt and new brake discs all round this year. Next expected major is the clutch ?

Any experience/views

Of no help to you, but keeping up with the skoda assist beyond 3 years was only £145 for 2 years and includes full Euro breakdown cover, sounds like it is a bargain for anyone whos car is approaching 3 years old.

Just tried the RAC. Their On-line, 10 % discounted price, £77.50 !

Ouch !

I took this out in March as the warranty ran out then. Two years cover for that price was indeed a bargain.

Do you use quidco or any of the cashback sites? Breakdown cover usually attracts good deals.

I'm not too sure.

I think you're right. But are we comparing like with like ?

I think SA won't do full recovery to UK, if required.

Lets do the maths anyway.

Warranty on my 2003 Fab ran-out in March 2006.

Engaged AA basic break down cover for UK since then. To date, that cost £120 for three years.

Used AA European Breakdown cover for previous 2 trips @ £49 per trip, together with this years @ £59 = £157, giving a UK + Euro total of £277.

Whereas £ 2 x Skoda assist @£145 = £290

So, equivalent yearly cost is as follows:-

£277/3 = £92.33 for AA and . . .

£290/4 = £72.50 for Skoda Assist

Looks good.

SA is about as comprehensive as it gets without paying silly money and includes repatriation/ hire car etc

Can you take up SA, once the warranty period has lapsed ? If so, where' s it available ?

I wonder whether they would charge a premium for the likes of me, who did not opt for it when warranty lapsed.

Trouble was, when the opportunity arose in 2006, I wasn't contemplating yearly foreign trips, so that basic AA UK only cover was the best bet for me.

Nick

Dunno, like you say it was an offer that landed on the mat just as the 3 year freebie ran out, I suppose it is to keep your business in a car unlikely to require a call out. Doubt it would be available once you have allowed cover to lapse tbh

Went back to the AA, and this time was quoted £49 ! Euh ? So went with that.

Nick

God I didn't even bother with any when we went to Germany for a week last year :o

Figured unless it was anything major wrong with the car I would be able to get us going... but had no problems and she chewed up the miles no probs.

As long as it's well serviced and you give it a once over before you head off you should be fine although suppose it is good piece of mind to have it and £49 isn't too bad... weird how their prices have changed so much though!

Weren't Sky insurance offering 1 year with Euro cover for £49 on here recently?

Just been looking into this as I haven't been overly happy with RAC - UK only. They have quoted me £99 for renewal - solutions one option with cover in any car, and recovery to home. AA has a similar package for slightly more, although Im inclined to go with this as I haven't been happy with the RAC.

Dad has chosen a firm called AutoAid, which work like an insurance firm - unless you breakdown and call for a truck you pay a low fee. IF you claim then you claim back as you would on a insurance policy. Im not so sure about this - I just want no hassle!

Any other suggestions to anyone decent to use?
