How-to activate RNS-510 playback while driving without additional hardware

Featured Replies

Hi all

Not sure if this is for real (I don´t have a RNS-510/Columbus :weeping:), but according to this video, it´s possible to activate DVD playback while driving on the RNS-510 without additional hardware if you have upgraded fw to v2660. Notice the video shows RNS-510 in a VW.

Stop the car, load DVD and start playback, drive, wait for the screen to turn black/safety warning, stop the car, press voice command key on MFSW or (i)-button (top-right corner) on RNS-510, then press (Tone)-button on RNS-510. A chime signal should be heard, DVD halts for a second, then continues playing while you drive away. Even nav directions should be heard while playing DVD. However any further key pressing cancels playback.

Remember as a driver, safety first. If you crash due to looking at the DVD instead of keeping your eyes on the road, please donate your RNS-510 to me :D

Feedback or a free RNS-510 would be nice.

You sure it weren't the Columbus trying to save you some embarrassment? Hehe

This works like a charm. Well, not that charming as my voice controlled bluetooth kit still asks me for input (with a nice "Pardon?" after the chime :D), but when I cancel the voice control, the DVD resumes playback, even when driving... :)

Note though: you cannot touch anything whilst driving (e.g. volume, airco, etc.), seeing the "Tone" screen will then pop up. A little annoying, but for a hack it isn't that bad!

I will have to give this a try!!

Excellent - A hack so you can find yourself into a ditch or back of another car quicker.

How stupid.

How stupid.

There's always such a thing as a passenger...

and the law that says the screen shouldn't be within the view of the driver - the passenger should sit inthe back with a second screen

As above.

There is a reason why you cannot "just play a DVD" whilst the vehicle is in motion.

If you think you could sit there in the drivers seat with a DVD playing for the passenger and you would totally ignore it yourself you're way off the mark.

That is actually more dangerous than driving with a mobile.

Is this the "grumpy old men" part of the forum then? :thumbdwn:
