Cv boot/Gaiter split

Featured Replies

Hi Guys and Gals

My 2001 Fabia comfort has a droning sound coming from front wheel left hand side. Thought it might require realignment so took it to Fast Fit. Very helpful guy checked it for me (FOC) and showed me the CV boot / gaiter has split and is losing grease. So the CV joint is drying up and making this sound.

Is repair on this a big job? Expensive?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

If the CV joint has survived the loss of grease and it's just a boot you need then I believe your looking at around £20 parts.. problem is the hub has to come off to replace it, so while not a big job.. does mean a garage will probably want an hours labour I reckon, but could go either way.

Whatever you do get it sorted ASAP! or you'll find your self having a new CV joint fitted as well.. avoid driving it with the split!

The split is at the joint on the smaller end of the boot, would this be repairable DIY?

Thanks a lot!

The only way of repairing CV boots that will last more than a week or so is replacing them. Split boot kits (if they even still exist) don't work much better. So you need to be able to extract the driveshaft from the hub.

The problem with repairing the boot rather than replacing it is that if it splits again you might not notice until the CV joint starts acting up... By that point it may be to late, Not a good idea!

Make sure you check that none of the grease has got onto the brakes. I had this happen on my old citreon and the effect when braking on the motorway was more than a bit scary.
