I'm having trouble with my nuts - anyone else had similar ?

Featured Replies

Got back from holiday and found that a wheel nut was missing from my rear nearside wheel. Had it replaced, and it's now gone again, so I'm assuming there's a thread problem and it's not staying tight.

Anyone had a similar issue, and if so, what was the result ?

Never heard of that. If it tightens up OK, I can't see how that is a thread issue.

Check all the others on all wheels, just in case someone is monkeying around.

Yeah, they need torquing to 120Nm or something, which just wouldn't be possible with knackered threads, I think...

YTS Squirrel mechanics with ASBO's ?:P

Mark them all with a little smudge of paint and invent a new pastime of "Octavia wheel nut spotting".on your neighbours cars.

In all seriousness it appears that someone is knicking your nuts!! ( Take it they are all torqued up properly)

id be tempted to just mark them both with a marker so you can see them coming undone

Have you changed to alloy wheels by any chance and still useing the steel wheel bolts???????

If you have that is your problem as you need the correct bolts for the wheels

Was going to note something similar. The std fixing is a bolt, not a nut. Have you had studs put in for aftermarket wheels?

Skippy41 got there before me with one of the possible causes - the bolts must match the wheels.

The other cause is excessive dirt/rust between the disk and the hub. This usually happens when the disk retaining screw is broken off and the disk is held only by the wheelbolts. Flakes of rust get behind the disk and are trapped when the bolts are torqued up. As soon as you start driving the flakes are turned to fine powder. Did you try to tighten the other bolts with a torque wrench at 120Nm?

I suggest you remove the wheel and give everything a good clean. Then screw in the bolts without the wheel on to see if any of them bind up

Hi Brimma

you got your wheels painted. Did they also paint the "bolt surfaces"?

These should be clean. Otherwise the paint can cause the bolts not to hold on these surfaces.

You sure its not the chrome cap that's come away?

Thanks for the responses - I'm going to wet and dry the bolt surfaces to make sure they are clean before I put a replacement on and see how that goes

I would take it to the dealers, independent, or a good tyre fitters and get them to check things out DONT leave things to chance
