60k Mile service - First service since I bought the car

Featured Replies

My Octy is getting to the point where it will need an NCT (Irish MOT) in a couple of months time and the sticker says it needs a service at 64,000 miles anyway, so I reckon I'm as well off the get the service done before testing even though there's only a bit over 61k on it now.

I have a full dealer service history from the previous owner and I plan on changing the car to fixed intervals because I don't do the the annual mileage to need anything else, make some short journeys and towed a trailer for something like 1800 miles across Europe this summer. I'll take it to my local main dealer as I've had good dealings with him with the previous car. I'm trying to put a list together of things to ask about in case there are any known issues to be dealt with at this mileage.

The rear wheel alignment seems OK and tyre wear is even, but I'll ask about that.

The timing belt and water pump need to be replaced - this hasn't been done yet according the the service history.

I'll still use fully synthetic oil but change the service intervals to fixed and ask them about using the drain plug rather than vacuuming the oil out in case there's anything nasty lurking in the sump.

Are there any updates that should be done to the car software or anything that should be looked for in a car of this age/mileage apart from the routine service items?

Timing belt is the major item at 60K. The dealer should also check for any recalls (which will include any software updates) when its in. You should be able to get a good deal on service + cambelt change + MOT together (I paid £500 including fully synthetic oil). There are some additional 4 year checks listed in the service handbook. You might want to get a quote with and then without them. Also worth checking price with VW specialist / independant in your area, if you have one.

Get the MOT done first, see if there are any probs
