gear selection problems.

Featured Replies

Hi,

I currently drive a 1.9 tdi Fabia on a Y plate and if I'm honest I can be guilty of doing sustained 'high speed runs' a bit while doing a long distance journey. I think my car my beautiful super scud may be about to get its own back on me though :(

At the end of a 3 hour journey yesterday I pulled on to the slip road...came out of 5th and it wouldn't go back into any other gear. Stopped for a minute with the hazards on and after giving it a little while I could select gears again. Then doing the return journey today I had the same problem on a slip road about 10 minutes in.... Just looking for a little advice before getting it into the garage tomorrow.

I'm hoping I may have 'just' cooked the gearbox oil? As I had a similar problem on an old renault that had too much oil in the gearbox... My brother suggested the clutch may be on its way out? But I've only ever known them slip when going... not have trouble with gear selection?

Anyway.... My apologies for the obvious abuse I give my car in the first instance :(... and thank you in advance for any advice you folks can offer on what may have gone wrong with it :)

PS it's definitely a heat / revs thing as it goes into gear fine when cold.

might be a good idea to change the gearbox oil , can't do any harm

Clutch drag can cause selection problems, usually caused by defective release bearing. Excessive clutch dust on the input shaft splines can also cause clutch drag.

Box oil change wouldn't hurt, and is the cheapest thing to try first. Don't rule out engine and gearbox mountings either.

Thanks for the input lads :) Took it down the garage this morning and it was doing similar after running for only a couple of 2 minutes, so I fear I was kidding myself with the gearbox oil theory.

Fingers crossed anyway........

What did they identify as the cause ? I've had similar gear 'sticking' problems. Worst was jamming itself in reverse during a three point turn in a busy road. :[

My Skoda dealer lubricated the gearbox mountings and declared it all working fine. Unfortunately the problem is intermittent and seems to make no difference whether the engine is hot or cold - it still does it every so often.

Mmm... They've replaced a suspension arm which needed doing anyway (had my fingers crossed that it may be an indirect cause) but it's still doing it

I've narrowed it down a bit though. It may be due to the roads / speeds I'm driving but it seems to be happening primarily when I got from 4th to 3rd but not every time. Going to 5th is also a problem but happens less often... probably because I'm going 4th to 5th less often.

Also it only tends to happen if I've been in 4th for a little while (like 20 seconds+ or something).

The garage couldn't find a cause either. I'm going to keep in touch with them while I experiment a little and do some research. Problem is I don't really know much... The extent of my mechanical experience is working on my little old mini I used to have ;)

I'll post back here if / when I do find the cause though :) and fingers crossed it aint too expensive!!
