Creaking from Rear

Featured Replies

3 weeks into my Octavia Tdi Hatchback (3 month old demonstrator) ownership and quite frankly I'm loving it!! Always had VWs, but to be honest - the Octavia has them beat!

I am, however, driven to distraction by the creaking that comes from the back of the car. It only happens when on uneven roads, but I cannot quite place where it's coming from when in the driving seat! I have the feeling it may be rear door related, but they are so close to seatmountings and the boot that it is difficult to be sure.

I thought it could be the parcel shelf so I removed that, it wasn't the answer.

Turning the stereo up helps, but is hardly the answer.

Anyone had similar or got any great ideas about what it could be?

This will sound very odd and it is just an off chance but my first Fabia had a similar fault which was diagnosed as a loose spare wheel. Have a look in the boot and get that it is screwed in tightly.

You can imagine the sort of fool I felt when the mechanic simply tightened the spare wheel and the problem vanished. :o

It's probably a mile away from your issue but worth checking.

I get this problem from time to time.It seems to come from the rear door

catch receivers (brass U shaped yokes on wheel arch). 3 in 1 or a bit of grease put on the receivers sorts it out for me. Let me know if this works.Regards David

Good suggestions both of you, little too settled to go out and investigate these tonight - I declare tomorrow creak investigation day!

Anyone else with suggestions I can try just in case these don't work??

Try driving your car up the road with the rear seats folded down. If this cures it have a little look by the seat striker. Theres a little rubber stopper next to it, give it a couple of turns out and re try. I quite often find theres a little bit of play in the catch and it creaks, adjusting the stopper out just takes the play out.

I had an Octavia in during the week for a service, I noticed the creaking on road test. When I got back I adjusted the stoppers up. The customer hadnt said anything about the noise I guess he had decided to live with it, but he come back the next day to say thanks he was over the moon.

Ross,

I am quietley confident you may have hit the nail on the head, it's exactly the right area and I imagine it would sound *just* like the sound I hear.

The morning will tell....

Easy way to tell when stationary is with the seat up rock it back and forwards, if there is movement there it will creak, the stopper takes the movement out.

Let us know how you get on mate

If it's not that then try removing the plastic bit off the inside of the hatch (see attached)

This used to creak really badly on mine until I insulated it.

How easy did you find it to get it back on? I tool mine off the stop it noise and lost my temper (much to my neigbours amusement) trying to get it to fit back on properly

My neighbours have got used to me ranting at my car nearly every weekend Basil Fawlty style... it's an ongoing joke now in the pub Lloyd :)

Sounds like a job well done  - why can't all our cars be serviced to this standard?

And the winner is..........ROSS with his rear seats stopper suggestion!!!

Thanks mate, you have stopped me going mad... or so I thought - now the other more minor noises are driving me mad.

Anyone got any suggestions for these 2:

1) Handbrake. Rattles whilst in third gear (I don't think the gear is important other than the frequency it makes the car vibrate at) if I lift the handbrake a fraction (not even enough for the light to come on) it goes away. If I squeeze the underside of it just where it meets the console as if I were taking it's pulse it goes away (similarly if I jam a wad of paper between the handbrake and the console). Clearly neither of these are good driving positions for me - how will I pick my nose???

2) Headlining buzzing. Rear passenger side, difficult to locate exactly from the drivers seat whilst driving.

Glad to have got the biggy sorted! Not on a mission to silence the beast!!

Glad I could help :)
