was checkin out things to improve my skoda, recently bought, and well, microchipping comes up a lot on the interent, its a 1.9 tdi, any suggestions if its good or bad idea?

Normally you microchip pets,but if you want to microchip your car,could be handy if it gets lost.

OP... microchipping as in those cheapo "tuning boxes" on eBay for £20 are a bad idea - at best they'll cause an engine warning light to show, at worst they can cause serious engine damage.

Loadsa people on here rave about remaps - having a company professionally tweak the program on your cars ECU to improve BHP, torque & fuel economy ...doesn't mean a right lot to me but that's way to go to improve your cars performance. Have a nosey around the forum - there's loadsa threads about remaps.

There are 2 good ways of tuning an Octy TDi, remapping and a tuning box, and one bad way, the "fleabay resistor mod".

Remapping means that a specialist re-writes the lookup tables that tell the engine how much fuel and what injection timing to use for given engine load, temperature and throttle setting. This will normally give about 30bhp more on a 1.9TDi, and often gives better cruising fuel consumption too. Check the "Site Sponsors" section for a list of some reputable companies who can do this (themselves or through agents). Cost is usually £300 to £500, with the upper end including trimming the map to suit your car, and some time on a chassis dynamometer.

A "tuning box" works similarly, but by intercepting the signals from the ECU to the injection system, and modifying them, hence it's also known as "interceptor chipping". Reputable companies include Dragon and Van Aakan. Cost is similar to a remap.
