Just doing a quick check on the girlfriends car 01 1.9tdi fabia. Saw the foam on the rear shocks coming apart at the top (both sides) and wondered if that was right. And the rear disc doesnt look too good either, car drives fine, and has over 100k on the clocks. Do I need to start replacing these items?

Cheers

Discs are ****ed by the look of it.

And looks like the rear bumpstops need replacing too.

The disc is well and truly wrecked.

those bumps stops will just scrape through an mot, but those discs are completely shot

:+1: on the brakes. Also, there should be a shield covering the damper piston rod I think, attached to the bump stop, which is probably now around the cylinder... :rotz:

Bump stop - Yup, you can see the shield - it's at the bottom. Hardest part is unfastening the wheel arch protector/mud guard. A short or right-angled screwdriver is handy and I'd suggest a good under arches wash a day or so before doing the job as all that muck will head straight for you. Have fun.

Can you remove the rear shocks without removing the rear wheels and arch liner?

Surely you could just cut a little bit of plastic away to reveal the bolts?

thats what i would do

Kinda knew thoses discs didnt look right :o

And now that you mention bumpstops - I remembered using the car to transport heavy stuff a while ago.

Discs I know how to change, and pulling shocks out, but how do I get the bumpstop off the shock?

Thanks again.

Dont worry - just did a search for bumpstops, looks easy 'nuff!!!

I think everyone's missing the point: the shield that's now rattling around at the bottom of the shock should be up at the top, keeping the crud out of the damper's innards, as far as I know. I don't think they can be stripped in the way you want...

The damper has a shield, am I right in thinking this is part of the bumpstop too?

How would u go about replacing this part btw? Would you have to unbolt the top bolt (of the shock) and slide the old one off, and new one on?

the shocker needs to come off, then the top mounting removed from the shockr shaft , then a new bump stop can be fitted, the sheild is separate from the bump stop and will require refitting to the new bump stop

Are the bump stops on the MoT? A quick sanity check on SWMBO's car shows that ones gone that way, and the other is not far off. If it's a fail, I'll sort them on the credit card, but if not I'll wait until after payday...
