Replacement front brakes MK1 1.9TDi

Featured Replies

Hey guys..... i think im gonna need need front brakes. the previous owner put on new pads but having checked myself theres quite a lip on both discs.

they still seem to work fine, though my missus thinks they are a bit spongy... i quite like them, they are easy to modulate and if you press hard you will stop swiftish.

there is a bit of a judder under light braking so i guess these brakes are slightly warped or unbalanced too.

but what do i replace them with?... i just want direct replacements, no enlargements or anything. i have the 16 inch wheels i think...the ones with like 7 or 9 spokes (maybe more! havent counted!) any good online stores? or is dropping it off at kwikfit sufficient?

also.... im not sure on exact size.... one website shows different brake discs for 02-03 cars than 03-08 cars.... my car is an an 03!!! so which do i get!

Eurocarparts or GSF are the best suppliers. The ATE (Teves) disks are painted on the non-running surfaces which should inhibit rust. The OE linings are Textar, front (T4322FF) and rear.

Despite several threads concerning uprated brakes, I find the standard setup with the above linings to be absolutely fine - it would take an insane style of driving to outrun the standard brakes and I just don't drive like that.

I have used OE spec Textar linings from GSF for replacements with no problems whatsoever. Measure the thickness of the disks with a vernier caliper - they often look as though there is a severe wear lip due to rust build-up on the outer edge. Many brake disks are needlessly replaced. Don't push the old brake fluid through the ABS unit when you retract the pistons.

eurocarparts dont stock the ATE brakes... unless im gettin the wrong end of the stick.... and what are these linings you talk about? do i need to buy those as well?

Depending on what is either worn or damaged, you will need brake disks and pads. The pads have the friction material bonded to them. Don't fit new disks and use old pads unless you can reface them.

VAG don't make any of these things - on the Superb the front calipers are ATE and the rears Lucas/Girling. The pads fitted as original equipment are Textar.

I'm sure Eurocarparts can supply suitable disks but if you want the ATE parts you might need to go elsewhere. ECP were selling the ATE disks when I last looked - try GSF.

You will need a piston winding tool to fit the rear pads.

the rear discs and pads were changed by the previous owner.... he also changed the front pads...so the pads are not that old. he'd changed them because the on board computer said they needed doing. i hope he replaced them with the proper pads that have the sensors in.

im guessing he got someone to look at them and they said the front discs would probably be ok for a short while, while the backs probably needed replacing completely. so i should be ok to fit just new discs since the pads are only about a month old. what do you think?

im fine with the brands supplied on eurocarparts an they have a shop just where i live so thats dandy.

thanks for the help

Also while i am here...

the second key fob doesnt work.... as in the key physically works (i.e. works all locks and ignition) but the remote locking aspect doesnt. they looks pretty new and unused and is attached to all the other little keys you get with the car (including some wierd plastic one) on a key ring with some dealer tags. Im guessing this key has never been used...probably because it wont remote unlock/lock the car.

how can i solve this? will a local skoda dealer help me out? is it just a case of reprogramming?

Split the key fob in half and check/replace the (CR2032) battery

If you are unsure how to split the key then take a look here

batt was nearly dead....replaced it, but still doesnt work

followed this

Program and Reprogram Your Car Remote Key Fob Control Transponder - Program Your Keys Free Instructions - Program Keys - VW Audi Seat Skoda

and the slightly odd suggestion of just pressing a button and waiting a minute from the manual....both dont work. though with the programyourkeys method im unsure which key is which!!! is the one i want to program supposed to be in the ignition or in my hand?

ok so this morning i tried swapping the keys around

my working remote key in the ignition.... ignition on..... i then locked the car manually with the non working key.......... pressed the unlock button an hey presto.....i get a beep! waited a few seconds pressed unlock once more and bobs your uncle, fanny's your aunt the key now remotely opens n closes the car. result!

Don't use the cheapest GSF pads mate, they have no anti squeal backing on them, as I've found out they rattle like a drum over bumps, they gave me this gluey grease at the time which didn't help and I've since loaded them with copper slip but still they rattle, so make sure whatever you buy has a textured pad on the rear of the one without the caliper piston clip.
