Fuel Duty Petition.

The wine and perfume comparison is completely pointless. Where's the similarity, apart from them all being in liquid form?!

They're luxury goods and not required to make the country function....

You are missing my point! They don't require billions of pounds worth of investment.

Also, how much do you seriously think it costs to try and stabalise the countries in which we import our oil? Maybe that's where all the tax goes?

Plus if it wasn't for perfume and wine women would smell bad and guys wouldn't get lucky.

I didn't miss it, I just ignored it, Lol.

Pretty much what downing street are doing where your pettition is concerned

Well we were paying £4.80 per Litre of water the other day, captive audience and all that, so by that standard fuel is cheap.

Tbh last year i was only paying 10.9p a litre (yes that's me!)

Is everyone on here negative about this, do you all agree with what teh government and the oil companies have told you or are some quietly signing?

Its not negative, its reality.

Many of us have seen this pop up several times over the last 4 or 5 years, and no matter how many people sign them, the price goes up week after week.

Its a fact of life that fuel is getting dearer, and most of us have come to terms with this and getting on with things.

You could always buy a G-Whizz..

Stop giving money to people coming into the country

Stop giving money out to other countries

stop wasting money in afgan, every time I listen to the news someone else gets killed, I just dread hearing it just in case its one of my mates!

stop letting more people in and reduce the amount of money people send out of the country.

Oh and stop paying benefits to those who can work but wont because they are getting loads for having a large family!

also the ones that say they are ill and get a nice wad for sitting at home while my very good friend DIES from asbestosis and couldnt claim a thing!

thats my rant over

off to bed now

The petitions (and these posts...) are a simple way of letting people vent off steam and feel that they might - in some tiny way - influence the future. What effect has anything anyone of us has said on here influenced the wider world?

It's just the same as talking down the pub of an evening, except no-one can afford to now due to fuel prices etc being so high. So we sit at our keyboards venting our anger at people who don't listen and just want to vent their own feelings.

See? The world is still the same as it was two minutes ago.:(

lol yea, no petition is ever gonna change anything. its a shame that the whole country would stop buying fuel till they lowered the price.

if your bosses change things and you dont like it you strike(royal mail)

so why doesnt every one strike?

they have us by our hair(women) and man bits(men). they are lying robbin barstools but not stupid.

I have not yet heard ONE MP actually answer a question they were asked like a normal person does

I watched Newsnight the other day for some bizarre reason and got quite annoyed by their ability to say nothing whilst talking for quite a long time.

The reason we don't strike is probably because it isn't the 'done thing' in Britain. We tend to write letters with strong words like unhappy and disappointed in them and then put up with whatever it was we didn't like in the first place.

Even though I'm not overly keen on the French as a nation - although my sister married one and has lived there for years - they do at least kick off in style when they're peed off by something. It quite often involves fire, throwing things off very high other things and using lorries in some way.

In fairness if the government didn't give into their every demand the royal mail workers made would make money instead of losing it!!! The end of the day, you do as your boss says or you get looking for another job...

Yeah, lets not buy fuel for a week... oil companies/goverment know that the people on strike will give up. How long would you last with out getting paid? 1 day, 1 week tops?

People need to be realistic...

How much is a barrel of oil is Zimbabwean dollars?

Depends on which day you look at what the exchange rate would be if anyone would accept them .And that's the way this country is heading as GB gets the idea of printing more money ,without the gold to back it up . On the plus side for Roberto ,they do to a certain extent raise digits to the oil countries ( mainly because they haven't got the foreign currency to buy oil) and produce a certain of ethanol to mix with petrol ( which in their climate causes no end of vapour lock)

I would sign it but will it have an effect, I think not!

I have an important question in my mind regarding this....

What sauce do you use when eating a sofa?

Brown lol.

only takes a sec to sign it so I did.

I agree with the Royal mail thing, mind I like it when they on strike as it meens I get a job for a day or so. I certainly wouldnt go on strike when I get a job unless its for a damn good reason. Id just be greatful for the job.

end of the day from being in the Army, you do as your told!

with my current situation I would gladly go for a few week to prove a point!

If they drop the duty on petrol, where will the government increase it to make up for the short fall in revenue?

Tax the big earners and fat cat bankers closer to 50% or 60%.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion I believe that, so some people have signed and still believe in democracy, freedom of speech and that everyone has a voice, I personally think that's good. I too have sigend a number of these over the years, I haven't promoted one like this in the past but I believe it is worth a try. Any time I have signed one I have always got an answer at the end from No 10, some times not the answer I would have liked, some times I have not been that unhappy although maybe they didn't go as far as I would have liked. How anyone can say they don't listen I don't know. There is, no matter how you look at it major unfairness over the price of road fuel and like someone noted the government makes more out of it than anyone and it doesn't make any of it, no overheads, no outlay, no risk, no-one else could do this. They are punishing motorists for using their cars, in the name of trying to discourage private car use for the environment. That is their current policy but they could change it tomorrow if we as a nation put up enough opposition to it, apathy is a major problem. What I don't understand is, obviously I have posted this on other sites and no-where else has there been such negativity about it to the point where some people have agreed and signed but not said a word, they would have been in the minority, as the majority could do mothing but say what a waste of time it is and how there is no point, what's that all about?

Apathy isn't the problem here, apathy is the result of the problem. Petitions will be ignored even if they have 60 million signatures, this is a fact. The only way for anything to happen would be to take the French approach and hold the country hostage until demands are met. Unfortunately terrorism legislation means you cannot do this as if you do you're a terrorist. Lorry drivers are also unwilling to take action any more due to laws brought in to curb their ability to do so.

If you don't want the petrol/diesel then don't buy it, or migrate to a country where petrol costs are more to your liking - that's all it boils down to unfortunately.

Apathy isn't the problem here...

I agree. Apathy and realism sometimes are very close to each other, so when some of us think it won't make a difference, then it can be seen as apathy. Some people genuinely beileve that a little online petition will make a difference, but fail to see that it is merely a diversionary tactic to stop us doing anything about the issue for real. :(

Anyway, if the petition does make a difference, which one will you sign next when they make the shortfall up in some other area with higher taxation? You may have cheaper fuel, but because the income tax or VAT has beein increased, you are still in the same position as before. There has to be a certain amount of money in the pot, it doesn't matter to me where it comes from. Call it fuel duty or income tax, they'll have to get it from somewhere.

Any relations of Guy Fawkes about, that want another go? :D

Good point. I wouldn't blow up Parliament though, we should aim for all the underclasses who never lift a finger and expect the world in return. Get rid of all the leeches on society and we might get somewhere. The total they scrounge off us all makes a decorative duck pond or moat repairs seem small fry in comparison.

Isn't the Pre-Budget coming up this month. Fuel (duty) is bound to go up by 2p per litre. :(

And?

If you drive 20,000 miles p.a. then your fuel cost will increase with rougly £40, or 11 p. per day. If you every day took 11p. out of your pocket and put it in a jar (or just tossed it away), would you even notice that your financial situation had changed?

IMHO complaints about fuel tax are out of proportion. Fuel prices have, more or less, followed inflation for the last decades. And engines have become more efficient (not many cars back in the 70's with a mileage of 45 mpg or better).

Another question is whether the govt. uses the extra money wisely, but that goes for all kind of taxes. And, as a few have pointed out, there has to be a certain amount of money in the pot. If not from fuel tax, then from where?

I see, we should go for the banks then? ;) (and forgive me for taking the liberty and correct the mispelt in your post :D )

A rather simplistic argument. What about all the products and services I consume? The prices of which will also need to absorb any increase in fuel tax.
