Water pump replacement

Featured Replies

Replacing the cambelt on PD140, so replacing the water pump at the same time.

I assume I don't have to worry about the new pump having the problem with the plastic impellor shaft snapping?

Thanks

Plastic??

Yes, plastic. Must have seemed a good idea at the time.

The impeller itself is plastic - the shaft is steel. When the shaft rusts a bit, it expands and breaks the plastic. The impeller then either slips on the shaft causing overheating, or disintegrates with the possibility of pump siezure and consequent cambelt failure.

In usual VAG style, no action has been taken (to my knowledge) to correct this. I fitted a "KWP" water pump from Eurocarparts which has a metal impeller. They also sell the Continental belt kits.

rotodiesel.

I thought there was a VAG replacement part with a metal impeller? My PD 105 will be getting this done at its next service, so I'd prefer a pump not prone to this rather than the plastic one.

as far as i'm aware all water pumps still have plastic impellors from vag

I fitted one to mine a few weeks ago, was a genuine Skoda one and it had the plastic impellor. I wasnt concerned though as the one I removed was fine, no sign of rust at all. I think some of the pumps that rust are possibly due to a lack of (or poor concentration of) G12+ in the cooling system.

I changed it due to paranoia really, there was nothing wrong with it and I am sure this one will be totally fine until the next belt change in a couple of years ime.
