Something in my tyres

Featured Replies

and i guess when i say "in" i actually mean inside.

after yesterdays Colerne trackday I unloaded the (now bald) track wheels from the car and popped them in the shed. On removing from the boot and dropping rubber first onto the path with a slight bounce there was a wierd after noice like something moving.

No spiggot rings. No bolts. No caps. No nothing to actually move though.

Another bounce.Yup still a noice.

roll/rock the wheel back and forward with a bit of urgency and it sounds like there are marbles rolling around inside the rubber?!

Not worried cos they are track wheels and the tyres are now 99% shot but anyone help me out with what it is and what could cause it?

Small stones?

Anything's possible :)

Exactly how shot are they? Are you talking through to the canvas?

They were MOT advisory and have done 2 track days since then.

Not quite canvas but out of all the tread they started with i'd say there's 0.5% of it left! :D

more of a suggestions please thread than oh my god i need answers thread

Just wondered if you'd got them down that low and gave them that much 'death' that the internal makeup of the tyre had started to brake down :D

... gave them that much 'death' ...

I'd like to think so ;)

I an thinking the same thing, you could have bits of the internal structure of the tyre rolling around inside. If you plan to use them again, get them dismounted and checked.

I would hope this was their last outing, based on the condition, but maybe not

Like you seem to be, I'd be intrigued to see what it was when you come to put new rubber on them.

Steve

If the strengthening bands have been subjected to abnormal loads, as there is less ( albeit only slightly ) compound on the inner tyre wall it may have ruptured and peeled, leaving bits inside the tyre .

This may be complete ********, but it sounds good to me...

i'd balded the shoulders at Hullavington and after Colerne yesterday they're bald (or right next to bald) all the way across so given the thoughts that they could be deconstructing themselves from the inside-out probably best to retire them from use....maybe! :D

I'll make sure I'm there on the scene when my local tyre fitter pops them off!

I've seen rubber granules inside tyres when they came off before, and on one notable occasion a set of pliers (but that was a nearly new tyre. Fitter was a mate of mine, and well pleased I was there as a witness when he took the tyre off).
