Tyre feathering on 2.0 VRS

Featured Replies

Anyone else had problems with tyres feathering on their 2.0 VRS. My old one (they look good in blue don't they) had pretty irregular tyre wear, and the dealer confirmed that he had heard of it before, but maybe it was because I had been driving it hard? I've just recently traded it in and bought a diesel. Apparently it doesn't happen on diesels?

Sorry for sounding stupid, but what do you mean by feathering? is it all 4 tyres or just the back or front?

Sorry Pagey, I've been away for a while.

There's a sort of raised lip on the inner and outer edges of the tread blocks, which you can feel when you run your fingers around it.

I checked the tyre pressures regularly, and had the wheel alignment/tracking done, but didn't seem to help on the VRS. It isn't on the diesel's tyres.

Is this common on the petrol VRS? Should I expect it on the VRS TDI?

had it on the one I just got rid of...rear wheels worse than the fronts

be interesting to see if it develops on the facelift

I think it's referred to as "saw tooth" wearing. It can be down to mis alignment or just an over zealous manufacturer toe-in (I think).

I suffer from this on the front tyres on my 1 series. Backs are fine. I also wonder if it is a low profile only problem or due to the run-flats I have.

There are a number of things it could be, none of them specific to an engine fuel type:-

1) Geometry mis-set, probably too much toe in.

2) Enthusiastic cornering, particularly if the LHF wheel is the only one affected.

3) Regular very hard braking.
