DMF paranoia

Featured Replies

Been looking on the net about all things Dual Mass Flywheel.

Have VAG group cars resolved this issue of failures yet? Or are diesel heeds all subject to the spectre of this dodgy piece of kit failing?

My car is a 09 pre facelift VRS CR tdi DSG.

I've been driving VAG TDIs for over 10 years and haven't had a DMF failure.

It's the same with Ford, PSA, and everyone else: car parts fail sometimes. It doesn't mean yours definitely will.

I am aware that dmf's are sourced from third parties LUK etc, just wondered if they have been any recent design mods by the manufacturers to make them more durable.

They have certainly changed them over the years as I went through a lot of them initially, then one lasted a bit longer, then the current one is still working after 20-30k miles.

I've just had to have mine replaced.

I didn't know what was wrong with the car, it just had a rattle intermittently on idle. seems to have solved a few other minor issues as well, such as clutch slip on the DSG.

Cost me £800 though! thankfully warranty direct approved the claim & i'll get back all but 30% of the parts cost due to my low mileage of 84,000 in 3 1/2 years.

I took the car to 2 different garages. a specialist VW garage Pini Motors, who couldn't trace the fault & wanted to take out the engine & gearbox to find out.

Then I took it to Crawley Down Group, my relatively local Skoda dealer, and the mechanic came out listened to it and said immediately what the problem was. they took out the engine etc and confirmed it. Had 2 1/2 days off the road. Gave me a "do you really want to go faster than 50mph Nissan Micra automatic!".

Had mine replaced after 33K as it was juddering due to getting out of balance. Was replaced with a single mass flywheel and new clutch under warranty.Mine is a 1.9 though. Its the best thing they could have done as the car is so different now and drives much smoother and responsive.

I have a PD140 DSG , I had the DMF replaced under warranty at 130,000kms , I now have 275,000kms and I have noticed its rattling at idle. Do they fail completely ??

They can do yes, and if they do go they can take out other things.... which you don't want on a DSG box. Change it.

Agree you need to check that as it can take the gearbox with it.When they break up they do lots of damage.

In the absence of the thank you button...............THANKS LADS.

I've been really lucky with my DMF on my Fabia vrs. It has a Celtic Tuning Remap which I know is not the most popular on here, but all the same, I had a clutch at 65k and the dealer said the flywheel was ok. At 90k still no probs, no additional rattles so fingers crossed it'll last out till my new octy vrs will arrive!!Kiss of death or what!!!
