Aircon Noise, I think?

I know its common for the aircon compressor to fail on VAG cars but mine is making the strangest noise!!

With the air con off it makes a horrid grumble/wine that you can feel through the whole car.

And with it on it stops! But it does make a slight squeek or wine every so often.

I take it that this is the compressor goosed or does it need a re gas as its not that cold, infact i dodnt think it works at all!

Ive read some threads on here about aircon packing in and there is also a valve which can be replaced on the compressor! is this right?

What would be th ebest couse of action for me to go down?

Re gas and then whole compressor or go for the valve first or just do the whole lot?
