Sub has started "farting" at higher volumes

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I've been running an Infinity Basslink Subwoofer with 4 channel amp built in running my front speakers for about 18 months.

However the past week or so it has started to "fart" if that makes sense at higher volumes i.e. it still beats in line with the song but it isnt crisp and there is distortion/ vibration on the bass notes.

I've also noticed my lights dipping a bit more than usual.

It seems to "fart" a lot less with the engine running - with the engine off and just ignition on it "farts" like mad.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Bad earth possibly?

crack open a window?

But seriously, check all the connections. Does it make this noise through both speakers and the sub? If you can disconnect the front speakers, then test the sub, and add a speaker at a time to see if it changes.

Duff battery, or battery connections, or duff power/earth connections to the sub.

Does the car start easily & crank over quickly?

Its just the sub.

Bad earth was my inital thought - but its been fine until a week ago.

I went out for a drive just now and it was fine.

But when I got back turned the engine off and turned it up it farted again.

Could be my battery?

I used to have a volt gauge which I took out a week ago.

After a cold night I turned ignition onto first click and voltage would be at about 10.5-11v

Think it could be original battery - worth replacing it before winter?

Its just the sub.

?

Maybe that could be connected to the problem if they happened about the same time mate? If it was a bit of a fiddly jobtaking out the volt gauge, if you bridged it out then check your wiring there.

Other than that, the sub might have some tiny perforations in the cone of the woofer. If that happens, then it's curtains for your sub. I've had it happen/seen it happen in too many installs. I've always stuck to high quality subs after about 3 dead ones in a couple of years.

What sort of gain and bass boost are you using matey, also is the sub matched in terms of impedance?

I.E 4 ohm sub with a 4 ohm amp?

Could possible be the spider thats come away from the cage, but then again i've not seen that happen to any of the dearer sub's.

Sounds like a possible fault in the power supply on the sub amp. Cap breaking down or something. IMHO of course.
