Hey guys, just joined the Forum, how u doing?

Im from up in the north east of scotland and am on a lifeboat crew, was called out to the floods on sunday night. Drove throught something in a hurry that was much deeper than it looked sadly! Engine cut out and i had to push my car to the side of the road and run a mile to the lifeboat shed. Got towed up the road at 3am after we were finished evacuating people and the next morning took the air filter out. Ran ok, but massively steamy! after all the steam cleared, and a couple of days later - it still starts really smokey and idles like a bag of crap when cold, but once its warm isnt so bad, but still aint right!! any ideas guys? Im not noticing any loss of power or anything like that.

i appreciate this - me being a new user and all!!

Hi, and welcome to the forum!

Hmm, sounds like water in the air intake....unfortunately thats about the limit of my knowledge.....!

However, i'm sure somebody will be along shortly with some ideas and suggestions.

Out of interest, which engine do you have?

good luck

Hi mate, its the 1.9TDI 130!

yeah there was some water in it, but ive drained it all out, and replaced the Air Filter!!

Cheers tho bud!!! fingers crossed someone can help and its not a bent ConRod!

if any water has got into the engine, then yes you could have bent a rod

check all the electrical connects for water and dry accordingly

you could also have water in the intercooler pipework, so best popping the lowest pipe off to check

Or the quick cooling can blow your head gasket, or even crack your valve seat or head. But the latter isnt very common.

Also, intercooler is probably full of water.

If you are fairly compatant, take all the pipe work off from the inlet manifold back. Also a good time to clean any crud in it.

HTH, Dave

As others, drain the intercooler, and any other low points in the intake.

If that doesn't sort it, I'd take it for a compression test (don't use a spark ignition tester; a CI engine will launch those into orbit!)

Thanks a lot guys, appreciate it - ill crack out the socket set tomoro and take the intercooler pipes off :) hopefully nothing to serious!!

time for an oil change methinks!

I ran a company car fleet many years ago and Cavalier Turbo Diesels were prone for partial siezing when driven through deep water. Most died an unhappy solid death, but we had one that once it coughed and spluttered, always ran with a very very slight imbalance at tickover (misfire) - failed the MOT on smoke emmisions, so the head was removed and indeed, one piston was about 3mm lower in the bore than the other 3, with a corresponding wobbly con rod underneath it!

Is the Fabia smoking more than before? If its running, you may get away with what others have suggested, if not, the compression test will confirm if you have a lower reading on one compared to the other 3?
