Is there any truth in.......

Featured Replies

I have factory fit xenons, with self levelling and washers, in my octy2.

I was tempted to upgrade the main beams to xenon because you can hardly see the difference when they are turned on compared to the dip beams. So did a bit of research on vrstu's site and realised that my headlight units were missing the plastic nuts that hold the headlight in at the top.

One quick trip to the dealer to get some replacement nuts, a couple of days later they had arrived. The dealer fitted them for me (and why not), I also asked for the levels to be checked as I knew the drivers side was pointing a bit low, now this is where it all seems a little overkill!

The service guy checked the headlight levels and confirmed that they were wrong, then the vag-com guy plugged in the magic box and told me that one was pointing too high and one too low and that one headlight had been unplugged at some time causing the basic settings to be implemented:rotz:.

The car is now booked in for a FULL DAY:eek:! for the healights to be stripped down, the xenon control units to be removed and reset, some vag-com work, and a lot of other work that sounded far too complicated for me to even start to undertand:confused:.

Has anyone else had this sort of experience with their factory xenons?

Is my service guy being far too over the top (and he usually is)?

Should I shelve my plans to change the main beams if unplugging the headlights causes this much trouble?

I hope this is being done under warrenty ? If not it might smack of then pulling a fast one for to extra money. Mind you i have no idea what is involved with setting up xenons.

Bit sniffy that one. I had Xenons and unplugged them, reconnected them no problem.

As far as I know the headlight setting is done at PDI using their VAS5051 or whatever and that's it. Unless you're not paying I would suggest they calm down a bit.

Id forget the upgrade of the high beams to xenon if i was you.....

As you may notice from the dipped beam xenons, they take a second or two to get fired up properly and this initial switch on is the most damaging to the units.

No problems when disconnecting/reconnecting my xenons, albeit on a mk1, but i'm sure they work in a similar fashion?

A full day sounds excessively excessive!

Surely you can reset the xenons without stripping the whole lot down !

Surely it can be reset using VCDS.

It can be done with VCDS, I did mine on the Superb a couple of weeks ago as they where angled way to low. Now they are setup correctly (20 minute job) I rarely have to reach for main beam

The man from your dealer.. he talk ****

You can unplug them as often as you like, because you have to do it to change the other bulbs.

The settings are instigated via VAG-COM and unless they are saying a motor is stuck of something there is no need to strip down the light to do basic settings.

FWIW don't do HID main beams, just get some +50% or better H1 bulbs

It's hobsons choice for me as far as dealers are concerned, both my nearest dealers are the same owner, then there is VW and Audi dealers nearby, but they come with their respective price tags!

In a sorry way I will be happy when the car is out of warranty, then I can get to it and fix these things myself, and know it's not been messed with or excessive work done to it.

I thought unplugging the headlight sounded like a pile of bull, purely because I could see no way to change the other bulbs otherwise.

No they didn't say there was s stuck motor, it sounds like they are making work for works sake, I take it the dealer is paid by SkodaUK for warranty work? That would explain why they do so much work for little or no reason.

I think I will go with some brighter bulbs, and by happy!!

Actually it seems there is a problem if you switch the engine on with the headlights unplugged. I know because I had to have my (OEM Xenon) headlights re-adjusted when I got it back from having a new mudguard fitted. They were both fine when I dropped it off, but when I got it back neither headlight self-adjusted any more and were both way too high.

Only took my dealer 1/2 hour to do (and yes, it involved connecting to the dealer's software tool), so I don't know why your blokethinks he needs to do all that other work.
