Fabia 4wd Conversion????

Featured Replies

Just sat pondering. Question for all you motor heads out there as I'm not up on this. Is it possible to convert the fabia into a 4wd using octy 4x4 ruinning gear or maybe Audi quattro gear from the TT??? Is this within the realms of possibility? If so how big a job is it and what are the parts that would need changing?

I'm just thinking about how amazing it would be to have all available power going through all 4 wheels on the skip instead of just the front two. Most of you know it's hard enough to stop the wheels spinning on a standard furby vRS when trying to accelerate quickly in the wet. Try it with 400lbs of torque!!!

Is this possible without breaking the bank?

Yes. If you've got the skills/cash

must be possible

I believe Jason was looking into do the same thing with the drivetrain from an S4

Anything is possible if you have the money and experitise.

Although i'd imagine upgrading The Skip would be more of a task than putting a whole new drivetrain under a Fabia shell

Talking about a whole new gearbox, driveshafts, and possibly subframe, etc. Then there's the issue of running the propshaft down the car..... Can be done, but I'm not doing it now to the mongrel.

Get a limited slip diff - ATB, type thing. Will be amazed at how much better it puts down 2wd. ;)

4x4 tdi furby!! :P:thumbup:

As said with enough money, warrenting it? Nah....

A.T.B. and just learn that in anything other than a sunny, dry day you dont have a chance of getting grip below 4th gear, and your all good :)

I was lighting up the wheels on the 'damp' road following a 4WD scooby in 3rd gear...

damn, I'd forgotten that car had the regular open diff, half a job...:rotz:

I've had a ride in that car and it is FAST, but was using a petrol gearbox so only had a top speed of around 110 in 6th. However, for 1/4 miles it's great. It's just a conversion I am not planning to the mongrel anymore. 2wd for life.

only 110? was that because of the derv not being able to rev as high? looked fast enough though! ;)

No... it's because the gearing is different for the petrol box and so the road speed was a lot lower compared to the engine speed than with the derv box.

I'm sure it can be done given sufficient time and money expended, but I'd reckon you're looking at new rear floor and fuel tank, some sort of transmission tunnel, and custom rear suspension links because all the VAG cars I can think of that offer a 4x4 model (inc Haldex system) have a wider rear track than the Furbie.

I reckon it would be easier just to throw a V6 TDi in the back, and run that off the rear wheels, and kep the 1.9TDi in the front, and power the fronts ;)

Sadly illegal these days apparently. Even when it was legal, it was normal to use 2 matched engines front and rear (and in the 1950s and 60s Citroen actually made a 2CV 4x4 this way).

How come these are allowed then? (YouTube - Tiger Z100) Or are they not road legal? The video shows them as having indicators and space/lights for a number plate, so I assume they are. . .

and wasn't the twin engined MTM bimoto TT road legal?

Cool bit of info, however when did us under dog vw owners do normal :D

I was thinking 400bhp in the rear wheels, 300bhp in the front, a nice balance of power then, more at the back to rip it up :D
