Is it necessary?

Featured Replies

Have 2.0 140 dsg Elegance 55 plate, and the four year is now up but at 34000 miles i think its to early for all these major items to be replaced, for instance on this Forum members say about having a new waterpump fitted as well at this service. Have been quoted £669 for the service without pump etc. Now i have driven lots of vehicles in my time and only twice have i had to replace a pump and once for cambelt which had broken (Cortina), £20 and i was on the road again. Are we at an age where these items are not as well made?.

I don't think the waterpump should need replacing at 34,000 miles but maybe others with experience of what happens if it fails may know better.

I fo think that £669 seems to be a lot for a service, what else are they doing for this other than the normal checks and oil change ?

Don,t need to change on 2.0TDi.Waste of money and time.

As simbo says, the theory is that the pump is quite cheap to buy, and changing it involves taking the timing belt off, so you may as well change it. If the pump bearings fail it is likely to take the belt with it, and if the belt fails you will have bent valves and maybe other damage. If it was mine, (and my car is only a bit younger), I'd stretch it to 5 years maybe, but no further. It's up to you- the belt and pump will probably last for much longer, but if they fail it's very bad news.
