Alternative leaks?

Featured Replies

I've now sealed my drivers door twice.. I did all 4 last summer and 3 of the 4 are holding well so can't be my technique. I resealed the drivers door a week or 2 back but I still open my drivers door to water sitting on the seal,... where's it coming from?

I'm gonna strip the door tonight and get the watering can on it to see what's going on but thought I'd see if anyone else has had leaks that weren't due to the foam carrier seal???

I'm assuming that this can't be due to the main door seal as it sits on top of it. Could it be coming through those 3 little screw slot clip thingys along the bottom of the door for the door card to screw into? The water does seem to either gather to the left when standing outside looking down and left over night.. my road is ever so slight a hill and this would coincide with it gathering to the rear of the door,.. or after driving it appears in 3 little puddles all not to far away from each of the clips I already mentioned.

Any help welcome,, even if wild speculation. (well, no to wild) Taa, Rob.

I get water in through my windows when theres a lot of it (i.e. washing).

Or maybe the door seals are going, where the door meets the door frame at the top? (Mine also leaks there too.)

I doubt however that either of those would end up on the sill though.

I thought that the water was meant to/allowed to sit on the sill, but if it got past the rubber into the carpets then you had issues? (Probalby got that last bit very wrong though!) As I have wet sills, but dry carpets. . .

Water on the sills is ok, but I'm getting it actually on top of the rubber seal and plastic trim that runs along the bottom of the door opening.. where the boot and petrol pulls are.

If your water is in the same place your carrier seals may have gone, that said.. I'm sure mines good but still the water comes?

I've stripped the door this evening and don't think my seals gone, from what I can tell there's a hole in the carrier that's meant to be bunged but aint, I think it's the last guys upgraded audio installation striking again! I removed the outter window sill seal and poured water down the window and loads came through there but as far as I could tell with limited light non came from the edge of the carrier.

I'm gunna have another look in the morning to try and make sure this is the source of the water.

Missing bungs in the carrier will let water in mate. Time for some duct tape :o)

Right.. for future reference...

The three green clips at the bottom of the door that the door card screws into WILL let water through if the level gets past them.. at least on my car they do anyway. My seal was good but with all the heavy constant rain it's just been to much for the drain holes to deal with

I cut some thin rubber squares and fed the screws through them so they act as rubber washers, they seem to have done the trick and when you tighten the door card up they get compressed between the plastic door card and clip/metal.

I also bunged 2 other holes in the carrier, one where a cable clip should have been and also water was getting through one of the three black plastic rivets towards the rear of the door because the middle was missing.

The MDF rings that support my speaker have also warped with moisture and now water comes in from behind the speaker.. used some foam and gaffa'd the inner of the MDF to try and remedy this. I think that I'm going to have to replace with a plastic collar eventually though.

So yeah, Basically if your fixing a leaky door this winter be sure to take the outter window sill seal off and chuck a bucket of water down there.. you'll soon see any other areas that need a little attention...

Guess What!!!!

It's leaking again!, So to quote Sausage roll!

AAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHH!

However, This time I'm confident it's my own stupidity that caused the leak! Whilst screwing the door card back on at the bottom I had the screws semi in place due to the rubber washers I made. I may have.... kind of..... screwed a little into my own sealant.. Sh!t. Now it really is re-seal time! I'd hopped I'd not done much damage but I've got more water then ever so must have started to pull the whole lip away.. but now it's not on top of the seal, or getting onto the carpet.. it's all on the vertical edge of the seal so at least It's manageable until a full repair is done!

So, EPIC fail on my part. But I'm gunna strip the door down this Christmas and rebuild / seal as I go removing the MDF rings etc. My Parents have a Garage in the house with electric, heat and light that I'll be taking advantage of when I head back! :D
