Cannot Remove Wheel Of My Octy Vrs. Advice?

Featured Replies

Hi there,

Slightly embarrassing but I am trying to change a flat on the rear of my Octavia I VRS. I have it jacked up and the wheel nuts off. I cannot remove the wheel. It just does not seem to want to budge at all. I can turn the wheel slightly left and right but that is all.

Has anyone else experienced this? Am I missing something? I have never had to change a wheel on this particular car before.

Cheers.

Pu the bolts back in almost all the way, let the car off the jack, and rock the wheel, or drive the car very slowly a couple of feet. That should shift it. Once it is off, wire brush the centre hole and apply some coppaslip.

Another way to move it is to protect the wheel with a piece of wood and hit it with a hammer, but try the first method first.

The wheel will be corroded on to the hub,i get them off by putting a couple of wheel nuts back in halfway then i use a rubber hammer & hit the inside of the wheel rim whilst rotating it,you may be able to rock/shake your wheel loose, dont go underneath or shake/rock the wheel without putting a axle stand underneath, the standard jacks are crap & dangerous in my opinion, once you have the wheel off i would clean up the hub face & wheel hub the put copper slip on the mounting faces so it doesnt happen again.

Thanks. I will have to try again in the morning. I also normally get a creak from that side of the car when I reverse and also sit into the car initially. Perhaps the two problems are linked?

As everyone has said jack up car safely and I use a hide mallet to wack the inside of the rim as you rotate it.(I keep one inside spare wheel in boot)

Give it a good clean with a wire whhel on a dry and plent of copper slip.

Worth doing all the other wheels just in case, better now that on a cold wet night at side of road.

Good Luck

Thanks All.

I have no rubber hammer or axle stand so I'll just have to improvise. All good advice though. Cheers.

I'll just reiterate the words on being very careful with just the car jack.

I had a jack fail on me once - the crack of the jack welds breaking came almost simultaneously with the thump as the car fell 1/4 of an inch onto the sleepers I had underneath - I had nightmares for weeks afterwards.

I've had to use all the methods above - which you try first is personal preference.

Good luck.

Try the easy way first............Pour boiling hot water out of the kettle onto the centre of the wheel....it should loosen the wheel on the hub (different expansion rates of aluminium and steel) and make it easier, a couple of kicks should do it, to take it off

It does strange that you can move the wheel left/right and it will not come off........

Just kick the hell out of it.......

just beat the hell out of it...

make sure you clean the hub wen you have the wheel off

Always ensure/insist your wheels are removed an copper slipped at every service.

That seems a bit unnecessary; I've never had any problems with mine and I live right on the coast, so a "severe" environment.

I was able to remove it. I loosened the nuts and moved the car forward a little as suggested. Then kicked it off. Thanks everyone for the advice.
