Dreamweaver CS3 questions. .

Featured Replies

good afternoon all and merry Christmas in advance. . . hopefully this is in the right place and apologies if it isnt. . Im trying to get a favicon to show in the address bar on my new website. Ive built it myself and have followed instructions on how to make, convert and upload the icon. . . now the thing is it doesnt work which is no suprise to me as most of the stuff i try doesnt, just wondering if there are any tech-guys who live in Dreamweaver can point me in the right direction:

so far ive made a 16x16px logo. saved as png. then converted it to a icon file using an online uploader, so now i have "icon.icns" file in the route folder.

i then have the following script between the head tags in DW: <link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/x-icon" href="/favicon.icns">

is this wrong or right, I have moderate HTML knowledge and although the icon isnt necessary It would be a nice touch to have. . .

many thanks in advance guys.

Rob.

I thought icon was .ico?

EDIT: Icon is, but it doesn't need to be a .ico file.

thanks for the useful link. .. just a bit i dont understand. it gives these options:

The following shows the correct format of link tags, using examples, for HTML and XHTML.

HTML:

* <link rel="icon" type="image/vnd.microsoft.icon" href="http://example.com/image.ico">

* <link rel="icon" type="image/png" href="http://example.com/image.png">

* <link rel="icon" type="image/gif" href="http://example.com/image.gif">

so if i saved my little 16x16px as a .png file, put it in the route folder with all the pages, which script bit do i use and do i just put it in the script like this :

<link rel="icon" type="image/png" href="http://example.com/image.png"> or do i have them in 2 halves like this:

<link rel="icon" type="image/png"

href="http://example.com/image.png">

like i said im fairly up to speed with html in as far as being able to understand various bits and pieces, its just sometimes the layout and order that gets me. .

thanks, Rob.

oh im using DWcs3 and Firefox as the web browser. ive also got some Q's about keywords and Description, as Wiki hasnt rly aswered the questions i have about them.

so if i saved my little 16x16px as a .png file, put it in the route folder with all the pages, which script bit do i use and do i just put it in the script like this :

<link rel="icon" type="image/png" href="http://example.com/image.png">

That would be the correct code, although... if you save a file called favicon.ico in the root of the web folder, any browser should pick it up!

i made a new image, and called it image.png the only thing is photoshop only gives me like 3 options for file formats. psd, pdf and tif. so i saved as psd and just changed the tag in the inspector window. shoved it in route folder and then uploaded to server. did a test by typin the address/image.png and i got the message :

The image “http://www.huntsdroitwich.co.uk/image.png” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

so im guessin there a error in the file.

:(
