Evening all

I am having a few issues with my vrs 2001. Its just past 90,000 miles and all was well untill just over a week ago. When the car is warm and i turn it off, say to get a paper at the shop, when a try to restart the car it struggles like mad? the car does eventually start but runs rough at idle for a good few minutes. The car also coughs out a bit of black smoke when this happens. Arpart from this the car runs great, just got back from euro disney in it and it was great. Have recently had a temp sensor changed as that was showing a fault and all was great untill a week or so ago. Any answers would be appreciated

Cheers nicky.

PS if a were to leave the car for half an hour or so it starts great!!!?????

Hi Nick

I dont have a solution to your problem but i have the exact same problem, the same car, same year, and i also 6 weeks ago replaced the temp sensor ,but i also have had the the management light come on.

I connected it up with a vag-com and the error code was 17704. which appears to mean "error in mapped cooling system (usaully temp sensor ". So hopefully one of the many clever peeps in this forum can shed some light on the problem.

Does sound like the restarting problem is perhaps the ecu thinking the engine is cold, when it's actually not, and chucking a load of fuel in... However you might also want to consider the maf before going any deeper into it.

hello chaps,

if you have already replaced coolant temperature sensor and fault still persist then dont waste your money on new air mass sensor. Try yhis first. Using your vag com go to 01, 02 and delete any possible fault codes, and then perform basic settings on your throtlle body. Vag com should prompt you how to do this, if not type 060 and run. After this 06 close application and switch off ignition for two minutes.

Take car for road test and see what it does?

Let us know how you get on

The only problem ive got is that i dont have access to any vag com software. Can this be bought of off the internet? Was wondering could a dodgy coil pack cause this problem? May be miles off there like?
