Window Defrosting

Featured Replies

I do have to admit, I like having this forum to ask you folks all my dumb, new to Skoda questions! :)

Heres on for you:

Whats the best settings for deforsting my front window? I have the max defrost button set, but in the menaul there doesnt seem to be any settings matrix for the Climatronic system. The nearest one says turn the max settings on, set the fan dial to 3 and dont have AC on. I have tried with AC on and off and setting fan speed to about 75% and couldnt really say which one is better. I know the weathers pretty crap at the moment but it took 20 mins to defrost this morning so any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Steve

I think that is a de-mist (i.e. mist on the inside of the screen) button rather than a defrost (i.e. ice on the outside) button.

Bin bag over the screen under the wipers and then de icer for any stray spots. Job done.

Of course that doesn't hep with the ice on the inside - for that the button you describe is what I use. 20 mins seems a bit much though. Spray de icer on a cloth and rub it on the inside and it helps speed things up.

worked fine for me this morning

I have this problem too.. I find my Diesel Octy VRS takes ages to heat up and defrost. I personally get stuck in with the scraper and wait long enough so I can see, then get in and freeze my gonads off till the thing heats up. :smirk:

Hilarious, 20 grands worth of car, climate control air con and all the bells and whistles and it still defrosts about the same speed as my old 16 year old 205 :)

I thought it was cold at -6 here today Domhnall :)

I simply push the button that automagically heats the seats.

Toasty 'nads in seconds.

Perhaps I should add "nad heater" to the "What do you want to see in the Octavia III" discussion :)

It has been said a million times before but diesel engines take an age to warm up, they will get worse and worse as they become even more efficient. I cleared the snow off our cars last night and sprayed the glass with de-icer, this morning the snow just wiped clean off the windows no problem, set the heated seat to 5 and the seat is red hot in a minute or two, lovely!

A aux heater unit or a webasto type unit for the dervs as it's fecking freezing now.

Heated seats is probably the best money I have ever spent on an extra in a car !!!

-13 C. That's warm. My car was saying -17.5 C this morning.

Not sure whether it will make any difference on the derv, but on my Mk1 Octy vRS this morning I hit the recirc button as per the manual and it cleared the window much quicker. On my Golf TDi though it would take an eternity to warm up. You could always get a power inverter and plug in a hairdryer or something... ;)

strange that it says on the standard heating diagram to turn off the recirc. I would have thought logically if its heating air, pulling it through and heating it again its going to do so quicker than pulling fresh, in this case, cold air in from the outside.

Outside air at <0 degrees will be very dry, ergo it will help to demist the screen faster.

I've never had a problem de-icing everything with the recirc on, everything warms up that little bit quicker.

I have found that clearing the screen of ice should be the last window to do with the engine

running. I start on the rear window with the heated screen on, then the side windows.

By the time I get to the screen, it clears better after getting some heat on it :)

Rented an O2 1.6 mpi two years ago in Joensuu, Finland, in February. (Friends first laughed at me, because I preferred the Skoda over an Opel Vectra. At the end of our journey, they all were convinced the Skoda was a very nice surprise.) Never saw the use of heated seats until then. What a joy, at -25°, to drive your car with a warm back (and bottom), while the aircon is struggling to keep part of the windscreen icefree. The trips over there convinced me to buy a new O FL last september, here in Belgium. As it is a 1.6 cr tdi and with the temperatures we have these days, I notice that the temperature of the engine indeed takes ages to get to 'normal', and the aircon seems underpowered.

But, when commuting with my bike these days (50 km a day), how I miss the aircon on my bike. And the heated seat... I wonder if we aren't getting soft, after all. Have to admit that 'my' temperature, having the right clothes, is no problem at all. Fingers, nose and feet (and some other parts I don't want to mention here), though ...

YIKES! I've only ever seen it that cold in Austria. Mind you my Octy I coped brilliantly with it then. Interestign tip about using the recirc button to defrost though, must give that a try. Mine sleeps in the garage but when it's this cold the window ices up inside when you get in :S

Right, this morning - Max windscreen - AC - Recirc - light scraper action. 5 mins in a mere -6. Seems we have a winner.
