Air con not working

Featured Replies

The aircon on my 03 Elegance 1.9 TDI doesn't work. About a second after I turn the engine off off I can hear a clunk coming from somewhere under the bonnet. Also the heater chucks out warm/hot air no matter what the setting. Is this all interconnected? Any advice would be appreciated.

Has you check your fuses?

Isaac

The aircon system is disabled below temps of 4c to prevent the system from freezing up.

mannyo speaks the truth!

It doesn't entirely switch off though, does it? My car still demists far better with aircon than on econ mode, even below 4 degrees.

I had this!

It could be the fact that its below the set temp for it to work but it could also be the comprssor clutch has gone or going, depending on the milage

The air con problem started a long while back - way before the big freeze so I don't think it has anything to do with the current cold snap. Excuse my ignorance though - what's a compessor clutch, what's it look like and can I repair it myself?

Thanks - I'll have a look in the light.

The compressor for the aircon is at the bottom of the engine at the front on the drivers side. You can't see it very well from the top and you really need to jack it up and take the undertry off to get a good look at it. Also to see the end of the clutch and pulley you need to take the wheel arch liner and another piece of plastic out of the drivers side wheel arch.

The noise you hear after turning it off is the anti shudder valve reopening after the engine stops - it's the same thing as the egr valve, on the back left corner of the engine looking from the front of the car, it has a round piece on the top and a big rubber pipe coming into it from the left, you'll probably need to take the engine cover off to see it properly.
