Drive Through Europe

Featured Replies

at the end of jan, in taking my car with me to uni.....in BUDAPEST.

iv had it serviced last week, new tyres and new pads all round.

since il be doin 2500-3000 miles in a day, is there anything else that i can check or change for the drive and the 6 months itl be with me before i drive it back.

also, remaps? shark sts or revo? (only non-OEM thing i want in the car.)

Just check the essentials before you go, oil, water, screenwash etc. Keep a spare litre of oil in the boot, perhaps a small tooklit just in case something happens. I have driven from the UK to southern spain several times now and never had a problem. The biggest issue is going to be tiredness, take regular breaks and if you feel tired stop and take a quick 10-15min nap.

2.5K miles in a day is not possible unless you can average more than 100mph for 24hrs and that does not allow for any stops at all.

Dont forget that most roads in the previously eastern block countries may not be up to the standard of the rest of europe, so once you enter them then progres may well be hampered by road quality.

2mannyo;

You would be suprised how good the roads are, my country spend in last couple of years around 20-30 billlion dollars on highways and motorways.

Some are even better than you have in UK.

Best regards from Croatia!

The worst roads I've been on have to be in Belgium. The best have to be in Austria.

Just make sure the car is tiptop, and that you plan your route well and don't put yourself under any pressure to get there by a certain time.

thanks for the advice guys, i think mainly il just try n split the drive over 3 days to give me n the car a rest.

i might get a new exhaust, mine seems to be blowing abit and i dont want to have any problem with it while im there, and the remap when i gt around to it.

lol il be sure to miss belgium ( bodge).

It would be worth checking on somewhere like the RAC website to find out what things you need to carry in each country you will be passing through.

Basics like headlight converters (if you don't have 'tourist levers' in your headlights), spare bulb kit, GB sicker/Europlates, first aid kit, warning triangle, high viz vests (at least 1 must be able to be reached from the drivers seat - so in the boot will still get you a fine of the French!) fire extinguisher etc, some are mandatory, others just recommended.

Also swot up on the laws for each country, some you have to use dipped headlights during the day when you are outside of a built up area. Some countries you also have to give way to traffic joining your road from your right!!

Take a look at the AA Route Planner site. Putting in Birmingham as the start and destination Budapest gives a road distance of 1198 miles and a journey time of 18 hours 06 minutes plus stops.

http://www.theaa.com/route-planner/index.jsp. Should be do-able with two drivers in two days in my opinion (but I am not as young as you!).

The AA and RAC sites will help you find what you need to take to stay legal in each country - spare bulbs, hi vis vest for each person, warning triangle, snow chains etc etc

Best of luck and enjoy the drive.

Hi

I agree with Gonzaga as we travel between two homes, one in Vienna Austria and the other Zagreb Croatia, 98% motorway, 5hours easy 400km, 4.5 hrs if non EEU customs post going into or out of Croatia is not busy. In fact now even the road between Slovenia and Austria is now almost all motoway. Drive to the coast of Croatia can now take 1.5 hrs all motorway from Zagreb !!! only to your destination point such as the islands will be on slower roads.

Ive driven through france, belgium, holland to Germany more times than i can count!

And the only thing is by law in a lot of european countries you need you breakdown kit like a triangle, yellow vest etc but apart from that happy motoring
