Sound like exhaust has snapped and is getting dragged along ground

Featured Replies

My Octavia FL 1.6 CR is now 4 weeks old with 4300 miles on clock and today, as title states is making this noise from what sounds like under the engine bay. I have looked under the car and nothing appears loose or dragging along ground. Its loud enough for passers by to look around, although it does seem to dissapear for 20 or 30 secs then reappear.

Oddly i remember my old car Octavia 1.9 TDI "06" having a similar noise that appear and then disappeared several times but sound only lasted for 20 secs then not again for another 5K miles. I had my old car with the dealer and they couldn't find a problem with that one. I am booked in tomorrow with my dealer anyway to sort out a rattle from under the bonnet, i guess its possible its the same thing but unlikely.

Any one had a similar problem or noise? Any ideas?

Kind regards

Kyle

Hmmmmmm, had a drive about 20mins ago and sound seemed to fade away after 10mins or so......... It defo sounded like metal though.

I was hoping it could have been a common fault and one of you guys could tell me what it was as tomorrow the dealer is likely to tell me they cannot hear anything................

It may have been a stone trapped in the brake assembly ?

I had a similar experience today, thought it sounded like metal on metal but more of a whistling type of noise came and went. I thought it might have been stone in brake setup as it had that type of screechy noise. I had a good look round and couldnt find anything.

Will see if it happens tomorrow on the wa to work, but interested to see if you get anywhere with this.

Is the noise dependant on engine speed or road speed?

i.e if the car is in neutral with the engine running is the noise present and does it vary when you blip the throttle?

or does the noise change depending on how fast the car is going? If you have the noise when driving along does it change if you select neutral and let the engine revs drop as you coast along? Does the noise change when brakes are lightly applied?

My guess would be a mis-fitted engine under tray at the front. When in motion the air is forcing it down to rub on the road. However, I am probably totally wrong as usual.....

I had something similar with another car. The exhaust route was quite restricted and as the rubber mounts relaxed over time, the pipework would clatter against the adjacent heat shielding, mainly when tight cornering.

Have any of the shocker covers dropped or rubbing against the tyres I get a similar metallic sound from my rear end as the covers have dropped

"It may have been a stone trapped in the brake assembly"

It started making the noise again just as i drove into the dealers carpark, right on queue!!

Thanks Guys and Gals

happened to me (again) on the way to work this morning.

just stop the car, go backwards for a few feet, then carry on. that's all you need to do to pop the stone out of the brake..
