the off road button (snow)

Featured Replies

Hi,

sorry if i'm asking a lot of questions at the moment but just about to order one!

ANyway i can only stretch to the SE version but i'm getting the 4x4 140 as i live in a rural area with lots of snowy hills in winter, and i often head up to scotland on winter climbing trips.

The off road button is an option on the SE, so how good is it when you hit a snowy steep hill. Is it worth getting as an option? I';m thinking for getting up and down steep snowy / icy hills it might help. I wont really be offroading as such in the yeti (well not yet but who knows!!). Or if you just stick the monster in 1st and let it descend in gear with engine braking is this just as good? How about climbing hills, does it help much?

I like gadgets, but if its not any better with this one for normal road / snow use then i'll leave it off. As its a cheapish option though i was tempted to add it 'just in case' lol.

Oh a quick 2nd question, could someone measure me the front to back dimension of the boot, seats up in normal 5 passenger position? I did this in the showroom the other day but lost the bit of paper i had it on!

Thanks :)

Lots of boot data in this thread. http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/145286-boot-dimensions/

I have the off-road button. It works, but I am not sure it is of that much use going uphill. Downhill it is really excellent. It was part of the package - I would otherwise probably not bought it - but then we don't have hills here :'(

Thanks :)

The hill decent would be a great bonus going down hill on very ice roads. On steep long hil, that last thing you want to do is to gather speed. Hill decent would keep it all nice under control. Full size 4x4 machines always have the option of going down to a lower gear in the transfer box, this massively lowers road speed for the same engine revolutions by as much as a half. Ordinary cars and crossover/soft roaders do not have a transfer box to keep speed ultra low but the hill decent can cleverly keep speed down in a very safe way for you. The off road button also changes the settings that other electronic features in the chassis control such as the ABS settings. With this feature switched on the ABS allows the wheels to slip slightly more than it does normally. This might sound odd but it has been proven that with snow a build up of snow in front of the wheels actually slows the car faster. I think that it would be worth having. As you live in the country, when the time comes to sell it could be a selling point for other country dwellers.

Hi,

Just remember to get the Winter tyres on first.

Else the car will go down hill quicker than you expect and somewhat out of control - as "The Plumber" explained in an earlier Post - but which I can't seem to find!

Graham

I agree, winter tyres are a big must have.

Hi Graham,

4 days to go to collecting your Monster

The link you were looking for is here My link

Regard the question then yes the off-road button does work well in snow as long as you have the correct tyres, which the standard fit Sports tyres are certainly not. Still mystified as to why Skoda make a vehicle with an off-road capability but only fit wheels and tyres suitable for a high performance saloon.

Have e-mailed asking this question but unsurprisingly I have not had a response. :wonder:

Basically if you read the brochure My link page 13 the system works exactly as described.

Would also recommend Hill Hold as this will give you the complete electronic driver aid package.

Regards,

TP

Hi TP,

Yes 4 days and counting!.... we're all cue'd up with the dealer.

Tow bar goes on tomorrow, insurance sorted, dealer has done all the paperwork.... Just got to part with the money !!!

Winter tyres are on the way to a local fitters ( from mytyres) - so Summer "shoes" for the trip back home and then Winter boots on by Monday. B)

Having spent a surprising amount of time with the Off Road button pressed recently, I thought it did a really good job. As others have said, perhaps not making that much difference going up hill in extremis but a good aid to moving off on ice and snow with the noticeable difference to the throttle action (behaves almost like it's in a low ratio). I like the way it switches off automatically as speed increases and back on again as you slow down so you don't have to putting it on and off.

Downhill descent thing worked as advertised - very clever. Leave it in neutral and steer, speed variation by throttle and brake though all basically disconnected.

I'm no snowy hill ace having been born in the Cambridgeshire Fens and having lived for a fair while in the flat lands round Peterborough. Down here in the Chilterns with a lot of hills and snow, the SM has given extreme confidence in its ability to cope with the conditions. And yes, that's on standard tyres.... emoticon-0104-surprised.gif

Can I add to this. Steering control is much improved and the tendency to skid or slip is reduced. (This with normal tyres) I agree with the comments that winter tyres would improve the situation but I managed easily with the conditions over the last few weeks on the normal Goodyear tyres. The location and normal conditions dictate the purchase of winter tyres in my view.

Hi,

Winter tyres or Cold Weather Tyres .. call them what you like.... the reason you should have the on your car in "Winter" is best explained here:

Michelin Cold Weather Tyres

It's not so much about driving around in Ice/Snow - but more about getting better grip in cold(er) conditions - (of which Snow is just one of them).

Graham

Sounds like they could be suitable all the year round here in Wales!

I'm sure they are right but I have not noticed any reduction in performance on the colder days. (like today) Having driven 40+ years without changing to "Cold Weather Tyres" I don't think I will start now. Why? 'Cos the tyres fitted worked OK for the recent cold spell - for me anyway.

If I was to get a second set of tyres, I would go for an Road/Off Road hybrid.

Back to the original question, the Off Road button is a "must have". It provides so much more control.
