Loose tube!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Long time lurker, first time poster! Always think "must post" and oddly never do. This forum has been such an excellent resource in the 2 years I've had my Octy.

Hopefully this is a brain teaser for someone, I took the pretty cover off my engine (2005 1.9) to look for any coolant leaks as mine seems to drop by about 200ml/1000 miles. Anyway, I didn't find anything obvious so I'll mention it when it goes in for it's MOT next month.

While I was under there though I spotted a 'loose tube', it seems to have a connector next to it but surely that's so obvious it couldn't be! After all, the air filter was changed 10,000 miles ago at a Skoda dealer. Surely they'd have plugged it back in!!

Answers on a postcard! Do you think it's important? Should I plug it back in? I was a bit disappointed to not find coolant spewing out of it :dull:

Appreciate any thoughts

I'm no expert, but if the car still works perfectly I'm guessing this is a breather tube to allow air in the car's oil system to expand as the engine warms without creating high pressure in the engine block that would force oil out through the engine seals or low pressure on cooling that would suck contamination into the oil. I'd plug it back in, but the only thing the disconnected tube is likely to be doing is occasionally dropping very small amounts of oil into the engine bay. Only allowing filtered air to get into the tube once it's reconnected rather than whatever's in the engine bay may slightly improve the oil quality.
