Strange knocking from front suspension

Featured Replies

Have had my car nearly two years now, but in last few months a knocking noise is coming from the front left suspension. I mentioned it to the service men when i got the car serviced, they said nothing was wrong, it was air intake sound or something like that, but i am certain its not as it only happens when goin over speed bumps or ambulance humps. I have been in other octavia's but they never have made that sound and its not the drive either. Really has me stumped as the mechanics said there is nothing wrong with it. would appreciate any feedback.

Sounds like you need to replace your drop links. They are not expensive, you will get them on ebay for about £15 plus delivery and maybe 1 hour labour. Fairly common problem, they always go first on the passanger side first because thats where you hit the pot holes. Genuine skoda parts will cost approx. 60euros for the pair. I would suggest you do both sides together.

I was thinking it's most likely the drop link(s) too. Most garages I know are quite happy to replace one side and not the other.

much appreciated lads now to get to the dealers before the warranty is up

I would think drop links will be a fair wear and tear item

After the thick end of 2 years, yes.

Open the bonnet and check your air intake going to the airbox, mine makes a slight kind of noise that your describing, i tried tightening it but to no avail, have a look at yours and see before you go changing stuff like droplinks etc

If it's the air intake, there should be evidence of some sort of it rubbing against something (maybe worn paint, or a cleaner patch on the intake plastic).

looks like we were all wrong bought it to the skoda garage this morning, to get it checked out and also look for skoda paying for the steal piece going underneath the doors as the jack broke and left a lovely rip in it.......anyway the knocking noise was due to one of the exhaust holding brackets breaking.

That must have had either a heavy thump or the metal has sucumb to fatigue to do that after two years.

The rear silencer is bolted solidly to the body with a rubber hanger further down the car, the first time i've ever seen that.

Still there was a bolt missing from it, for some strange reason!

The Octy A4 is notorious for breaking exhaust brackets because the systems is a heavy bit of kit, and the brackets aren't! ;) I don't see any obvious reason why the A5 would be any different.

HI just reading this, have the same problem I think with my 02 octavia 1.4, can hear knock going over ramps or pulling away turning steering wheel left to right? I'm hoping its the rollbar bushens as these have been done 2wce in last 4 yrs. Any ideas??

There also are: ball joints and steering rack ends, they also can make a knocks over the bumps. My car do but Mechanik said recently the suspension is tight as new.....
