YATT (Yet Another Tyre Thread) or should that be Tread :-)

Featured Replies

Hi,

I want a couple of new tyres on the front. I've got a standard 05 plate Octavia with standard alloys and the current tyres are 205/60R15. I've had Dunlops on for the last year and I want a change. Currently doing ~ 1000 miles/week, manly motorway miles but I will go down to more normal 1000/month in April when this contract ends. There was a good thread last week and I was keen on the MIchelin Primacy HP but they don't do a 15" fitting so if Dunlops are out and it looks as if Pirelli don't play happily with the Octavia, what tyres are being used by everyone else ?

I'd like good grip and longevity and low noise but suspect that I'll only get one or perhaps two of those.

A quick look on etyres.co.uk says that your first "premium brand" tyres (for cost) are Dunlop SP200's at around £74 a corner fitted.

Moving up you next hit Toyo CF1's at £76 a corner fitted.

Next Bridgestone ER300 or Goodyear Optigrip at £80 per corner.

I think any of these would serve you well.

My personal experience on Bridgestone's was so so.

When they were fitted they were excellent, noise was low etc.

However out of 4 brand new tyres one started desintegrating (and no it wasn't a tracking issue) and the valve stopped accepting air on another.

Have the Toyo CF1s; I had them to replace Dunlops on a previous car, and they offer better wet and dry grip, and wear rates, than the Dunlop!

Tired of overpriced Michelins I chose the Optigrips to replace the Dunlops on my Scout . The Optigrip provides a very quiet comfortable ride which feels very agile on the move , and felt more assured in the recent snow . As to ultimate grip it feels about the same as previous tyres , but is way superior in wet conditions . I have no idea as to their lifespan - a huge factor nowadays with the recent hikes in the price of tyres .
