Felicia Cold Start Problems

Featured Replies

Hi i have recently bought a 1.3MPI 2000 Reg Skoda Felicia and i am having problems when it is cold. Here is the problem - When i start from cold the engine starts and runs but sounds like it is misfiring and you can smell fuel. If you rev the car it shacks etc and clears itself eventually. If i switch off the car straight after starting it from cold it will not start because its flooded. This only happens after leaving the car for a while. Only way of clearing it is to remove the fuel pump fuse and turning over. If i start it after a couple of hours it seems fine. Car doesnt drive that great bit hesitant. I have tried the following.

Head Gasket has been replaced

Coolant Temp Sensor has been replaced

Intake has been cleaned

Maf sensor has been cleaned.

I have taken the plugs out after it has been sat for a while and turned it over. Nothing comes out.

Valves have been adjusted

Has anybody got any ideas of what this can be. I have tried searching everyone and cannot find anything. It wouldnt be that bad but it seems to be drinking more fuel than it should be and runs like a bag of nails.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Coil pack?

Lambda probe?

Spark plugs? - Check the gaps?

Recent service? - air, fuel, oil filters.

Just throwing some idead out there really.

The lambda probe can be tested with a multimeter across the terminal I believe.

Try taking the air filter out, and see if it runs better. If it does, get a new fiter element.

Otherwise, it may be worth taking the car to a fuel system specialist, since I've got misgivings about the injector(s), assuming the new temperature sensor to be the revised model.

also a dodgy throttle body can cause this too, have you had a diagnostics check done??

I havent had a diagnotics done yet. Is it worth removing the throttle body and cleaning it or is it a sensor built in that would be at fault? I know its pretty much a sealed unit.

Thanks Rob

Fuel pressure regulator?

I'd doubt it's the lambda as on many such systems it's not used during warm-up (as it's only capable of detecting "rich" or "lean" and you need a rich mixture during this phase) and when it's warm it's only used on low throttle openings; under load it's ignored. It -may- be faulty, but that wouldn't be the sole cause of this, I'd think.

Get the plugs out and take a picture of 'em. Usually causes some controversy.

Had similar issues on a 1999 GLi. Feels like it starts on two (sometimes three) cylinders. Would have assumed distributor/HT leads, but it hasn't got any. Will try the air filter. If not, I suspect the coil unit.

Is it a safe bet that it is unlikely to be the injectors if it clears after running for a couple of minutes?

Bring back carbs - they were so much easier...

No they weren't!

Spark plugs? - Check the gaps?

I don't think you can adjust the gap as they are preset triple electrode types.

Mine too, like 25-28mpg and as you say, sounds like a bag of nails. Valve clearances are OK, filters, plugs and stuff. Just can't fathom it. :S

yes i'd say so, fuel injectors are a lot more reliable than folks make them out to be, many faults get wrongly diagnosed as a dodgy injector :wonder:

Did you get anywhere with this? I still have similar issues and am out of ideas. :S
