VW 1.8 20vt turbo engine conversion

Featured Replies

im seriously considering a 1.8 turbo conversion in to my felicia pickup

has anyone done this conversion before?

what other parts are needed aswell as engine itself and gearbox? (full list of whats needed would be ideal)

is there any websites with info/guides on this conversion?

i have £2200 will this be plenty for the conversion.

i will be fitting the engine with my dad who is a mechanic, but just need some more info on it, if its straight swap or if its going to be a pain in the arse lol.

many thanks

Engine

Box

ECU with complete loom

custom mounts

Is it going to be fwd or rwd?

Better brakes

Better suspention

More money

it will be a right royal pain in the arse to be honest, a lot of custom fabrication is required... engine mountings being your first headache, then you will need to make an exhuaust downpipe from the turbocharger and join it up to the exhaust

you would be better off using the complete 20v engine and gearbox from the donor car and also graft in the gear linkage somehow, but the driveshafts will be the wrong length... then you will need to think of some way of putting the hydraulic clutch master/system in there too (again from the donor car)...

then it would be a small matter of making up a custom wiring loom to make it run, plus you would be better off getting the donor ecu re-flashed by a specialist to kill the immobilizer which is not cheap.... also many of the late 20v engines use drive-by-wire so you will need the drive by wire accelerator pedal assembly and wiring from the donor car... need i go on??

then you would need to find a radiator with the unions in the right place (possibly from a felicia 1.9 diesel), and to get enough clearance down the back of the engine you would need to remove the heater fan/intake box completely.....

so, it's not impossible really, but it would need a lot of work to get it going

Is that a C20XE/LET?

its a 20XE mate but a let would fit just as nicely, turbo's and fwd rallycars are not a nice mix tho but i did think about it mmmm 350bhp :p

Do you think, conversion on Opel engine is easier than on 1.8T? I think, it is silly. 1.8T fits on 1.6gearbox almost without problems, with complete electroinstallation isn't problem with finishing of all...

well it was easy for me as for rallying the skoda 1.6 gearbox would last about 5 miles with the turbo engine fitted to it plus you have to use a small clutch, i fitted the opel engine and gearbox and had it running in 2 days work, its lighter too than the 1.8 20v i believe (based on me trying to move either engine around on my own).

i bet the pickup goes well tho with that engine in it emoticon-0148-yes.gif

i must say i don't like the idea of using a felicia gearbox on a 20v engine, plus you will need to modify the sump to allow the inner cv joints to go in

That't right, Tom. Of course, it is the simplest adjusment on stronger engine. But 1.6 gearbox hasn't tenacity, then weak half axles... I used gearbox from Golf GTI, half axles from audi quattro... For the present it is ok, we'll see... :)
