Can I use VCDC HEX+CAN on any OB2 vehicles?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Is it safe to plug VCDC in other vehicles that comply with OBD2?

Friend has 2003 mercedes and wondered if i could read codes without demaging my VCDC HEX+CAN?

Regards

It's safe yes, but don't expect the software to read much.

I think you'd be safe so long as you only read and dont try to change any coding.

Someone managed to clear a fault on a corsa recently, and a few others posted in that thread their own experiences of non VAG cars.

hi,

no i dont expect miracle just wanted to be on safe side really.

When i used to work for SEAT dealer, on the old VAS 5052 there was an option to read dtc on non vag cars and wondered if this was the case vith vag hex+can.

Thanks for your opinion guys

Hope you all well

Regards

I've tried our one at work on different cars, though I've never got it to work with a Ford. It'll only read the engine ECU and you can look at basic sensor data. One feature that I like is the distance travelled with the engine management light on.

Ford uses a different protocol under the OBDII standards so VCDS and VAG-COM should not work. There are several other European manufacturers and some Asian that use the same protocols as VW. VCDS does work with these in generic OBDII mode. Don't expect to code modules or do many of the advance functions that VCDS can do on a VAG car. OBDII does not support these functions.

It worked on a 2002 Jaguar X type today.

OBDII is a standard which applies to emission related data only. All petrol engined cars and light vans intended for sale in the UK from January 2001, and those diesel engined from January 2004 must be OBDII (EOBD) compliant. All use the standard 16 pin interface, and all are accessible from the drivers seat.

However, as has already been stated, not all protocols are the same, and therefore VCDS doesn't work with every make and model......

Just to add it has worked on a 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser, 2002 Toyota MR2 and a 2003 Mercedes A Class.

My cable works on BMWs but it needs some other program to read the faults, not vagcom. :)
