Hi everyone. First post, so apologies if this is in the wrong place.

I have a 2004 Fabia 1.2L 12V 64hp Classic on 57,000 miles.

The engine has been "growling" for some time - Only in drive though not during tick over. It sounds a bit like a dull version of the old tappets problem on 1990s Fords... can't work out what the problem is and I plan to sell the car soon. I don't think anyone would want to buy it with this problem! The car drives 100% though, it just sounds bad.

Any help is vastly appreciated, thankyou.

If it's a hydraulic tappet engine, change the oil, and make sure you use one with a relevant VAG 500 series quality spec on it.

So could the wrong engine oil cause this noise? I have no idea what is in there right now... Chances are its very cheap stuff

Yes, most likely by being too thick an oil for the engine.
