Anti-roll bar rubber

Featured Replies

When I went for my JOT I also got an advisory note saying 'Offside front Anti-roll bar rubber mounting deteriortaed but not resulting in excessive movement'. I've got 2 questions regarding this:

1. I have a Skoda Comfort 1.4 2002. Which size of rubber mounting do I need for it?

2. Is this a job I could do myself or do I need a garage to do it?

Thanks for any replies.

Of course you can do it yourself. Depends how handy you are with a spanner. To get the right part just see your local Skoda partsman. A few £'s will sort you out.

On the anti roll bar, where the bushes mount, there is a plastic collar moulded onto the bar to prevent the bar from sliding side to side through the bushes. What usually happens is that these collars break up due to expansion of the roll bar underneath caused by corrosion. Once the collars are free the roll bar can move across the car and come into contact with the aluminium suspension console.

The phrases used on the MOT paperwork are pre set and picked from a list, I suspect that these collars are beginning to fail and that the phrase used is the closest one from the list. To do the job properly you are looking at replacing the anti roll bar, the two bushes and the two clamps. It will be tricky if you haven't got full access under the car, as the sub frame has to be lowered down from the steering rack to get the bar out. I have seen them where they have had an improvised repair using Jubilee clips to stop what's left of the collars from moving, not satisfactory in my opinion.

The bar and bush diameter depends on the actual car, given your cars details a Skoda dealer should be able to supply you with the correct parts.

This was done on my car when the garage (a certain site sponsor) mislaid my replacement complete bar. Has done the trick for the last 12 months and the collars still haven't failed. that said a new bar would be nice
