Cold Starting Issues

Featured Replies

Hi,

Car went in for the 5th service, its on fixed service and I asked the dealer to check on the cold starting juddering/uneven running when cold.

They have told me 2 of the Glow Plugs need replacing at such a low mileage 45K!

The car has a warranty as I purchased it from a Skoda dealer, just over 3 years old (2005 55 plate) with 29k on the clock.

I questioned if the other glow plugs would need changing, as they are usually all replaced at same time ( were on my Golf 3 TDI), I was told the warranty would only pay for the faulty ones.

Question is should these have gone bad so early and should I get the other 2 replaced, to prevent issues/inconvenience (at my own cost, maybe free labour)?

My warranty runs out in June and I dont suppose I will have further issues as it will start getting warmer in the mornings soon.

What bugs me is my Golf 3 TDI, I owned from 30k too and replaced the GP's at 150-160k the first set, it had before I sold it at 185k.

Cheers

Do all 4 to save effort, the plugs themselves are not expensive it's the labour.

As for gone at 45k, the mileage really says nothing.

If you start the car cold and drive 1 mile, then dtop and repeat this regularly that will be a lot of cold starts to the 45k.

Compared to starting in the cold, driving 30 miles and thats a lot more use of the glowplugs than in the above example to 45k.

Remember the glows only come on to warm the engine cylinders before the car is started, so that there is enough heat for compression to cause ignition.
