Faulty Thermostat/sensor for Fabia 1.9 sdi 2002

Featured Replies

Hello All,

Temperature gauge shows intermittent fault. Will either show normal temperature or will not show rise at all.

Found loads of threads covering replacement of thermostat and sensor for the 1.4 petrols, but not for the sdi...

Does anyone know the part numbers for these parts and how to replace them? At the moment I'm assumuing the parts for the 1.4 petrols are different to those for the sdi. On the 1.4 it appears sensible to replace the complete thermostat housing as the additional cost / complexity is small - is it the same for the sdi?

Thanks

Jon.

Hi,

Replacing the temp sensor (coolant temperature) on the SDI is quite easy. if you look at the guide for the petrol it is much the same although the sensor is located to the right of the engine block (say at 3pm) rather than at the top. It also is out of direct line of sight but it is achieveable by feel alone.

As the guide says - do this when your engine is stone cold because you will lose a couple of pints of coolant if you dont manage to swap the sensor over straight away - and on the SDI the sensor is not at the top of the coolant circuit so coolant will want to come out!

Did this on my SDI a fortnight ago (no reading at all, very occasionally read 'normal' for a few seconds) and has already made quite a difference to the way it runs (feels v different and more economical according to the lying computer - yet to fill it up to get a brim-to-brim comparison).

Sensor can be found by contacting joriley (on here) or search ebay for fabia+sensor and it usually shows up!

Thank you Benatron - that's very helpful - I've ordered.

Thank you for the recommendation The Worm.

You can minimise but not stop the coolant loss by doing the following:

Engine cold. Remove expansion bottle top and replace tightly. This will release any residual pressure in the cooling system and stop it gushing out. Also, a carefully trimmed 2 or 4ltr water bottle bottle under the area will catch a great deal of coolant as it comes out.

Make sure the rubber O ring seal comes out too. When I did the wife's it was still stuck in there and it took ages to work out why the sensor and new ring would not seat properly DOH!

The worst bit of the job I thought was getting the connector block OFF the sensor. Still can't work out these new-fangle clip things.

This is exactly the same fault I had on my recently bought sdi. I read the threads about changing the sensor, but before ordering one I thought that I'd apply some of my 'magic fluid' to the sensor connector. After - eventually - getting the damn plug off, I applied said fluid and, like magic, the gauge reads reliably somewhere between a quarter and a half on the dial. A whole lot easier, and cheaper, than buying a new sensor which, clearly, was not needed. I wonder how many 'sensor faults' are nothing more than dirty connections? I also had problems with the switches for the electric windows. I completely stripped the switch down and cleaned up with the magic fluid, and all works absolutely fine now. I was surprised to find that the swiches use exactly the same technology as calculators and remote controls i.e. carbon coated rubber pads onto a PCB. Also used it to fix the dipswitch on my Mercedes Estate (a real switch!). What's the fluid? It's called Deoxit and is used primarily by the audio industry to clean connectors etc. Not cheap though. I paid £13.95 for a can some years back, but it lasts a long time. A quick Google threw up this:

http://www.audioaffair.co.uk/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=1150&md=05bfd68cdd17354a427f026ca8f558f4

but it's almost certainly available cheaper elsewhere.

Hope this helps.

*BUMP* add yet another fault to the list... yep the sensor decided its time to break, lets just hope its not a broken wire in the loom again...

06A 919 501 A is the part number according to many a search :)
