Intense rattling from my gearlever

Featured Replies

Next problem in line:

There is a constant noise from the gearlever. It's vibrating !

(Wonder why the wife smiles whenever she's changing gear (and she tends to do that a lot...) ??? ;) )

At some speeds/revs it's just bloody noisy. Especially from 130 km/h and up !

It's a used car, so obviously something is probably worn down (broken ???), but is it something specific and fixable.

Compared to my older (but no longer existing) Felicia, the complete shiftpattern seems to be leaning a little towards the driver seat (this is a lefthand drive model (DK)...

Leave the car ticking over, lie on the floor on the left-hand-side of the car, and reach under it (carefully, with a gloved hand) and hold onto the gear lever rods (they are visible, easily without jacking the car up). If that stops the rattle then it's usually wear in either the joint between the gear linkage and the gearbox (in some the roll pin wears an oval hole in the gear linkage) or in the joint in the linkage (which is slightly to the rear of the join between the two). Common problem and easily fixed (Jorily does a kit, I believe).

The gearstick is probably loose left-to-right as well which will also be sorted by sorting out the linkage.

I'm guessing as to what the cause might be, but does the self-centring from the 1-2 plane to the 3-4 plane feel weaker than on your old car? If so, I'd suspect that the right-hand self-centring spring may have broken, allowing the loosness and vibration.

Well, been laying on my back, in the snow and grabbing under the car !

Ratling disapeares somewhat, so might have to get a linkage kit...

As Ken points out, the 1-2 plane is weaker than the 3-4 plane !

Whats the location of those selfcentering springs ?

There aren't seperate springs for the detents, IIRC. And it's all inside the gearbox, as part of the selector/gate mechanism.
