Chip Repair Cost - If not free

Featured Replies

My front windscreen was chipped over the weekend - quite central so really needs to be sorted out.

I'm reading through my Admiral insurance papers.

I have free windscreen cover (as it's a comprehensive policy) however the wording indicates that a claim for even a repair has an excess of £70 (so probably not worth claiming).

So if my repair isn't going to be free, does anyone know the rough price of a chip repair on the front windscreen?

I've heard many places advertise that a chip repair is free if you're fully comp - I assume on the basis it's cheaper for the insurer to pay for the chip repair in full than to wait for it to fail and pay for a new screen (less your excess). For example, see here:

I've never had cause to try it personally though.

The repair is normally free with fully comp insurance so the excess of £70.00 only is for a windscreen replacement. But be careful that the repair does not count as a claim, as this will mean if you change insurance company you will need to declare the claim and it will make a difference to your premiums. This will not make any difference if you remain with the same insurer as they don't count it.

So if like most of us you shop around at renewal time it could be cheaper to get the £25.00 repair by one of the main windscreen companies, they are quite often outside Halfords.

Matt.
