IMPORTANT: Guide to control arms

Featured Replies

In my 2009 project, I encountered a very strange problem.

When removing the wishbone link and the guide link without this special tool 3287A(see pic below)

It is highly probable that an special adapter mounted in the wheel bearing housing will come out together with the link arms.

The adapter is a part of the wheel bearing housing and is formed cylindrical on the outside and conical on the inside..

These adapters MUST be taken of the link-arms and mounted on the new link-arms.

We had 5 diff. sets of link-arms all with different sized conical. None of them matched the wheel bearing housing without the adapters.

After talking to several VAG-dealers and the Danish VAG-Main Import Office, we got an official explanation from the Import Office, that they did not know about this problem, and that they have not wrote about it in the VAG-Dealers spare parts index.

Further more it is NOT POSSIBLE to buy thise adapters separate. They ONLY come with an NEW wheel bearing housing.

WARNING: Therefore: DO NOT BREAK OR DESTROY THESE ADAPTERS!!!

My Classic if from 03 and in 03 they changed something in the wheel bearing housing without telling the dealers. So to be safe, you must identify your vehicle carefully before buying and changing the wishbone link and the guide link.

See pic's below for further information..

This is the famous adaptor!!

There are two different sizes. Small is for the guide link, Big for the wishbone link.

Now clean it and put it on the new link.

Mount the new link.

This post will be updated again with further information.

Good luck ;)
