The Outback is a very large estate, much larger than the previous generation and on a par with the Superb combi. The highlight of my test drive was the automatic gearbox which is a CVT box.

However, unlike most Continuously Variable Transmissions the belt is metal rather than a rubber compound. This is meant to increase longevity. The box was very smooth and quiet although apparently there is extra sound deadening around the area and I did detect a faint whinning noise. RIde comfort is excellent although the handling is a little entertaining with quite a bit of body roll through the bends.

Unlike previous Subarus the dashboard looks great and the car is well (although not lavishly) equipped for the money, Space in the rear seats and boot is very good although the omission of even a spare wheel seems strange for a car designed with towing in mind. However, there is space for a full size spare if you want to buy one.

I have yet to drive the Superb combi so can't make a comparison yet but overall the Outback is a good car for those needing the reassurance of all wheel drive and happy with a petrol engine.
