Car servicing options

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have a Fabia VRS 53 plate which has just ticked over 90K with full Skoda service history. I am planning on keeping the car now for some time (till it hits about 150K). Now the cost its going to amount to for servicing between now and then including the agro of dropping the car to the garage, going home and then going to pick the car up again. I am planning on just service it myself from now on.

I am thinking of printing of the official service check list for my car of the Fabiavrs.co.uk website and keeping all the receipts and referencing them in the logbook/service manual.

If you were coming to buy my car with 150k for a couple of grand with all the receipts and checklist and you could visually see that cars up to date and in well looked after, would it bother you it had no stamp in the book???

Cheers,

Gaz

As long as you look respectable and aren't Scouse it wouldn't really bother me :)

Wouldn't bother me, am doing the same with an 06 plate VRS and 53 plate 1.2htp. I'm just keeping receipts for everything I buy and do myself, and receipts from the garage for the bits I don't have time to do.

I wouldn't buy a TDi that didn't have a current dealer or specialist stamp or bill for the cambelt change, because the fuel timing makes a real difference to drivability and fuel economy. Incidentally, getting the fuel timing right can more or less pay for itself over the belt life at specialist prices in reduced fuel consumption.

Yeah, actually I'd agree with Ken on the cam belt issue!

From my point of view, whilst you may be able to show that you've done the required work, would I be happy that you'd done it correctly?

Rightly or wrongly the garage stamp gives a feeling that the person doing the work knew what they were doing.

I'm constantly seeing threads saying how garages do everything properly and give great service...

Providing the std of your work didn't give me any concerns then i would have no issues at all, if it looked like bits of wire had been added anywhere they shouldn't be (as in clipped to the OE loom, or scotchlocks ANYWHERE then i would walk away.

I too would like to see a receipt for the cambelt change from a specialist.

Mine has nearly 100k on the clock, but I let my mate do it who's a mechanic. I keep the receipts for parts and just write in the book what the mileage was.

To be honest, by the time my car goes, it's going to be driven up to the apron feeder at my local car shredder!! emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

I can also service my car in work on sat on overtime :D .

Cheers for all your views.
