Car and Insurance for 1 grand. is it possible?

Well I've deicded to try and get motoring before the BTCC kicks off again.

Ideally I want to get a car and insure it for roughtly a grand unless something swings my opinions!!!

I did find a Rapid for sale in Eastborne which would easily match that criteria.

But I'm looking at more......badass cars this time round.

I spotted a few Saabs but the car cost is 500-800 depending on if I want a Turbo or normal one but insurance is 700 not too bad, I suspect BMs would also fall into that same range

I'm aware that anothyer Favorit/Felicia would also fit the bill.

By badass I don't necessarily mean fast/quick etc

I don't drive everyday, as I walk then get a train to work. So is it worth me buying a car in the first place?

Decisons!!!

driver insurance details? give us some idea of what we can suggest

£490 22 years old, 2 years NCB, 3 years driving, claim in first year, 3 Points for the car in my sig. Shop around and find out what companies recognise what discount. Got mine down from £730 to £490 just by putting my Dad as a named driver on the policy

we've just done this, got swmbo a 1997 honda civic 1.6LS, electric everything (and it all works...) , engine light is on and its difficult to start when cold (sensor?) but everything works correctly, no knocks or bangs, engine (once warmed up ) is sweet, oil/water ect fine.....

car cost £360 was taxed for 1 month (we just retaxed it) MOT until mid sept. insurance for swmbo (new driver) with me as a named driver £500 tpft, and we just had to buy a new battery £45. £860 to buy + ins, £1005 incl. new battery and 6 months tax.

edit: I wouldn't call thiss badass though :giggle: it is fully loaded however (how many people do you know with electric rear windws?) and the honda engine is nice, power to wieght of 98.26 bhp/ton, hits 60 in about 9 seconds, and revs to 7k B)

Good call Sharky - perfect for the money

As discussed, $64,000 question is insurance quotes. Best to track down some suitable/liked 2nd hand examples of what you fancy, and get ringing round for quotes. Don't forget the insurance broker sponsors on here - they don't just deal with fancy hi-end stuff :)

Ahhh yes the site sponsors.

That Honda does look quite nice. Shared floorpan with the Rover 400 2 very decent hatchbacks of that era :D

Nicely done Sharkrider!!

thanks, just been driving it today.. they do handle well for their time, my Dad had a rover 400, not much body roll... yet quite a comfy relaxed place to be, big soft velour seats, wood trim ect ...just very slow steering compaired to the fiat, lots of turns lock to lock (but then everything seems to steer slow after the fiat's variable electric systemm except for simons evo!) but quite capible for its time, best part is the revvy engine  and its made it three weeks without breaking yet! lol....

My son just picked up an Escort D van with 78K on the clock, 1st reg 2000., MOT til June but think it should get through without too much grief, Taxed till sept. all for £500. Insured for £460.

noo but the guy selling has just dropped the price.

An Alfa 164 2.0 TS in white for £450 (was asking 650), insurance will be £650. tax til end mar and MOT oct 2010

I'm getting the feeling it might be worth the risk

Only real issue being the car is 176 miles away near Skegness so i cant go view it at the drop of a hat.

From Bolton its a good 3/4 hours train and a bus ride just to get to Boston.

Cool.

Buying any car in this price range can be a bit of a gamble , but it's quite possible to get a good one that will give you a lot of use.

And anyway , if it does break down it will do it in style :D

Looking forward to seeing the pics.

Nelly cost me £700 and she lasted for over 3 years without any major problems so it is definately possible to get a decent car for this price range. Just a bit of a gamble sometimes.

Pics are uploaded in the blog :)

Surprisingly economical too.

OK it's not as nimble as my smaller Favorit and Felly used to be. Badass cars yes.

But....the alfa name has a lot more presence with the ladies, and ultimatly more badass image too.
