Have you had wheels refurbed?

Featured Replies

When getting alloys refurbished, how serious does the rim lip damage have to be to require welding over filling?

And if welding is required how much, on average per wheels will this add to the cost?

I got a quote from BJV for 4 wheels at £140, but they haven't seen them and I know that on the set in question they have some chunks taken out of the rim edge... not so bad a tyre can't be fitted but not so good you could just sand it down and of ya go.

Heres a link to a slide show of the whole wheels set, they're just standard vRS 16's. Have a look if you've got a minute and let me know if you've got an idea as to if this comes under normal refurb repair or additional cost repair?

Wheels for Refurb Slide Showl

Thanks!

Rob :D

p.s. ignore the shots of tyres on the end, slide show was made when playing with the idea of selling, but might just hang on to now for a re-furb ya see..

I've paid £160 for 4, and they were ****. Paid £220 for 4 for my current wheels are they are brilliant.

And that's in the "cheap" North West...

BJV will have no problem with those. I've seen ones done that were easily 10x worse than those!

Is that for powder coating ? - could you let me have details of the place you used - I have been quoted closer to £300 for powder coating of 4 wheels.

It was:

- Media blasting

- Acid dip

- Sort any damage

- Powder coat primer

- Spray/powder coat colour (dependant on colour)

- Laquer

And it was WRC in Bamber Bridge.

Check out the project log link in my sig, and you can see the finish.

Just had a look at your project log - very good finish. Will have to give them a shout and have mine done. Cheers

Good price, average seems to be £50 a wheel!

£50 quid a wheel should be the norm.Any more and there ripping you off.

Those wheels will be nothing to a refurber. My one managed to rebuild a good 2 inch long x half inch deep gouge cut out by a rock on one of my Dad's old wheels. The worst thing is buckling / flat spots caused by potholes.

I thought you meant my Evolo's till I read further, nearly spat my coffee over the laptop :o

I had some 16" vRS alloys refurbished by BJV and they were so awful I felt I had to complain and in the end the 'nice' lady told me to ?@!£ off and take my ?@!£ing wheels with me. Those were in hi power silver though (costs extra) and apparently that shows up every defect in the wheel. BJV don't repair wheels as such - they don't use filler or weld wheels - so they need to be reasonably decent to begin with or you most likely won't like the end result.

ffs...in gold leaf?

Right, taken all the comments on board and emailed BJV a link the the slide show to ask their opinion on how much of the damage will be removed or visible after refurb.

Got any pictures of the damage that you could still see once the wheels had been done? What was it, deep kerbing?

I went to the wheel speacilists and they wanted £300 + for a set of wheels

I told them to jog on

Rob, No wheel refurber is going to give you quote over the phone for welding repair jobbies, they would need to see the wheels to give you an accurate price. Only a strip and repaint could they give an off the cuff price.

Just wait for the discount code to appear once you've asked for an online email quote :)

Happens everytime I get a quote, and yes - they are overpriced to start with. Their work is good though; at least in the Manchester branch where I've seen a couple of sets done. But they often (once a quarter?) have a decent discount. So if you can wait keep an eye out for that - has been 35% off a set of 4 before now.

I can get pictures at the weekend, but the issue was corrosion, not kerbing.
