power steering

Featured Replies

Hello, I bought a 2001 Fabia last Nov and since then have had issues with the power steering. The dashboard light was always on and the power steering would only come on after a hard turn of the wheel or when braking after some time. Problem is for the last fortnight the power steering hasn't worked at all. I have read a few posts about replacing sensors. I was thinking about checking the power steering fluid but after discovering where it is located it doesn't seem to be an easy option. Any advice much appreciated.

Hmm I thought on none VRS's, the power steering fluid reservoir was easier to access. I know its under the battery tray on the VRS due to room... depends what model you have? Assume its a none vrs as its 2001. I don't think it would be related to fluid though (I was told no light comes on if theres low fluid). More likely the sensor or a faulty pump... or maybe the battery?

It's a classic. It's not the battery as I had it checked recently. So I was hoping it was just the fluid needed topping up. I ruled out the sensor because the power steering doesn't work at all now. Now you've mentioned the pump I guess it's probably that. Trouble is finding the time to get it fixed not to mention how much it will cost. I've never bought a car that had so many problems in such a short space of time. :-) Thanks for your help.

Got the same problem dude, had the fault codes read and now waiting for some advice.

The filler is under the battery tray (16mm and 13mm sockets needed i believe)

Checked mine, fluid was full (same syptoms but as someone said, if fluid low the light wont cycle at all)

Found a place on ebay that sell the sensors for LHD so a length of wire needs to be added, I will probably give this a go and if it doesnt cure it sell the sensor on and buy a pump.

I have had the same problem since begining of November! Although mine comes and goes... but recently just switched off completely. Normally I'd leave it sitting before driving for about 5 minutes and then the PAS will come back on.

Is there any way to check if the battery is to blame? is there like some test?

A battery test?

The PAS system is electro hydraulic meaning an electric pump is used rather than a mechanical one driven by the engine. Battery must be in tip top condition and alternator charging. If you have a 41Ah battery and it needs changing i'd advise fitting a 60Ah or there abouts, really does help. Also might be worth investing in a new battery earth lead, only about 12quid and solves a lot of electrical gremlins. A fault code check will help with any obvious faults.

The reservoir is only easy to access on models like the 1.4 16v where the air filter is built into the engine cover so the battery sits further back. On the MPi and diesels its a pain but you must check the level. If its low it aint going to work, basics first. Its quite common for the rack to leak into the rack boots so no oil is obvious leaking but the level will drop. A warning light will only show for this if the pump overheats.

The sensors are problematic on the earlier models, look for the all plastic sensor, thats the early type. The later metal tyre are much better, also vRS models and later cars have a seperate sensor and wiring loom, these are less problematic again.
