Cleaned the EGR and a new air filter PD130

Featured Replies

I know its not an octy mk1 but I just spent the morning changing the air filter and stripping and cleaning the EGR valve on SWMBO's Passat, it has just had an oil change and some other bits for the MOT so I thought I would try and lessen the black smog that has been following it lately. Now because I dropped a socket before I took anything mechanical off, I decided to put it up on the ramps so I could drop the undertrays and retrieve the offending socket (why is it always the 10mm that jumps out of your hand ???). I must say it was nice working at the extra height as not so much bending over (oh err missus :D ) Its a fairly easy job on the Passat (imagine this will get moved to the Superb mk1 forum soon :p) but what a load of cr4p there was in there. I will get some pics up when I find the cable for the phone.

Some of the examples I have seen while searching seem very sooty, and others seem more oily. Mine was definately more oily

and after taking a good hour just to remove the crud off the valve, I put it all back together. When I went to put the under tray back on I noticed that the intercooler had a good amount of oily cr4p caked on the bottom hose joint so I decided to pop the hose off and give it a wipe over. All I can say is when I popped the hose out I though I was doing an oil change instead :o:o Luckily i had the bucket that I had been using to clean the valve next to me so managed to get that under the oil before pulling it out all the way and letting it pour out, must have been about 250ml of oil came out. Gave the bottom tank of the IC a good clean out with paper towel(good stuff that doesn't fall to bits) and put it all back together again.

Took it up the road for a quick test as it is usually worse when cold and all I can say is I no longer have a black cloud behind me when I boot it :D :D :D

went for a longer drive to collect SWMBO from work and the Idle is now rock solid at 800rpm, previously it had been varying wildly sometimes getting as high as 1300rpm.
