Strange grating/rattling noise on acceleration-any ideas?

Featured Replies

Hiya guys, noticed for a while that when i'm driving to work in the morning and before car gets to full operating temperature, there's a weird noise

coming from the front passenger side footwell/wheel area. It tends to be more noticeable when the car is cold- ie first thing and when accelerating between

25-40 mph. It sounds like a grating/grinding/rattling noise. It doesn't happen all the time-happens in patches. I can't see anything unusual and haven't noticed any leaks etc..

Anybody else heard this on their octy vrs tdi pds etc?? If so, do you know what it could be?

Cheers

Is it inside the car or does it sound mechanical?

Pot shot: the cabin filter's (service item so could have been disturbed at last service) in that approx. area and i could imagine the plastic frame ratting if not refitted properly.

Hiya, it sounds mechanical. It sounds almost like two parts-possibly one rattling/rubbing inside another. Very strange.

i get this and my mate says its nothing

i am wandering if its something to do with the exhaust , it is worse when pulling away from cold

its a strange one ! :wonder:

A very common noise is a vibration from the airbox / engine cover. It sounds like a harsh metallic harmonic accompanying the revs when driving at low speeds in town.

Yep that's what it sounds like. It tends to be when its cold first thing or when car has been stood for several hours i.e. at end of day after work and when i'm just setting off

to drive home. I wondered if it was possibly a driveshaft or wheel bearing or even the traction control system showing signs of wear/damage???

Time will tell.

Don't suppose you ever discovered what this noise was?

Mine has started doing the same thing, though it seems to be coming from the front offside of the car.

I've got a  similar sound....but it changes depending on if I turn A/C on or turn all fans to OFF.

It makes this weird pulsating grinding sound, and it sounds as if it's coming from the engine, but when you listen in the engine bay, you can't hear it.  Mines obviously related to the fans/AC somehow.

Stone caught between brake disc and (ironically) the stone guard? Had that a few times thanks to gravel drive and it sounds like a bag of bolts.
